Everyone said it’s not the people it’s the algorithm which I never really believed.

Weir was an easy option to replace Winstanley and it looks like Jewell was equally important

Only one sick note in defence though, and sure enough that’s where it’s all gone wrong

Let's look at those signings shall we? Rutter for £40m, good player, but not worth £40m. Minteh for £30m, future prospect. Weiffer £30M, Got injured but needed time to adjust. Gruda £25M Came Injured and needs to get up to speed. Kadiouglu £25m, our only defender signed and is better going forward than back. O'Riley £24m Got injured and needs time to get up to speed. £13m Gomez who has only just joined us. Yalcouye £7 who immediately went on loan.
These players are not top half prem and we didn't even streagnthen our weakest area, defence, as we only brought in an attacking wing back.

£200M on a job lot of players last summer, prices up to £40M. More than we've ever bought in a one-er before, and more than we've ever spent. £200M, and that's six new players to be shoe horned in (eight now that Gomez and Cashin have arrived - plus three out on loan coming back in the summer, Cozier-Duberry, Yalcouye and Osman) - and yet only one (Rutter) has made any sort of impact, plus I suppose you could say Minteh is OK to use turn-and-turn about with Adingra. The rest? Not deemed good enough to start in midfield even when Baleba and Ayari are out injured.
We seem to be moving away from our South American recruitment which has brought us success in recent years too - buying now (at higher prices) from PL2, The Championship and mid-range Europe - and all the South American flair we had - Buonanotte, Enciso, Sarmiento and Barco - have been banished on loan.
Add to that a new Manager who, let's say, we're not all entirely convinced about .............. building progress? Feels more like breaking up the band. :(

We f***ed up massively by not getting Potter back in the summer and we’ll do the same if we don’t get Ashworth back too.

For all the positive media about succession planning, we didn't replace Jewell and Winstanley. And our first choice to replace De Zerbi turned us down, and we seemed to be scrambling round for ages trying to replace him.

Is the algorithm all it's cracked up to be? Or are we relying on it too much? As has been said, other teams have access to good data and all teams are picking up promising young talents.

And whoever is in charge of squad building (David Weir?) seems to have failed two seasons in a row; last year too thin for the extra games and this season completely unbalanced.
