Maybe you're using the cycle to work scheme or something but does it have to be new? 2nd hand is definitely a buyer's market at the moment. I recently sold my Basso Gravel bike for £700, cost me £1800 2 years ago and it was absolutely mint condition.
Where to look though?

Really want to give this a go at some point (or the Pilgrims Way to Canterbury). Looks awesome.

Start and finish here in Winchester on a sunny weekend...it couldnt get any better i dont think.

The North Downs Way looks good to go.

I might just order that Marin...

These guys have just announced their king Alfred's way event over the august bank holiday weekend, their events are normally pretty well organised

WIN CYCLING EXPERIENCES / MEMORABILIA AND HELP GB ATHLETES RAISE £25K FOR GOOD CAUSES

Fellow Albion Fans really could do with any help in promoting this prize draw, as we are looking to fund 90 places for charities to auction off this spring on days with the GB Cyclists (we have to pay for velo parks, athlete costs and keep a roof over my head). The charities will receive ALL the money form the places they sell.

The upside is that charities will receive way in excess of your £5+ donation, last Autumn every £1 donated saw charities make £2.57, and for you every £5 gives you lifetime entry into regular draws to win your choice of prizes. You also get a matching discount on experience days / event tickets. See the updates for previous winners.

You also get to nominate which charity receives the crowdfunded cycling place to auction off, we have raised £656K in pure donations this way...

The link is www.crowdfunder.co.uk/gbcharitydays

The prizes cover a range of sports so if you know any Cricketers, Hockey Players, Rowers or Rafting fanatics please let them know...

This February we are doing a draw every £500...

Many thanks and dm me with any issues arising. Your help is spreading the word would be gratefully received.

All this talk of gravel bikes makes me wonder if anyone on here has ever been over to the Low Countries to watch cyclocross. Seems a pretty full on atmosphere.

I have a Dawes cyclocross bike which I bought in 2010, before gravel bikes were a thing. It was my intention to use it on the Downs, but I then fell off my MTB in a low speed, high impact incident, breaking my shin bone (took 2 hours for the paramedics to reach me, and I had to be transferred to the ambulance on the back of a fire service Land Rover pickup), which kind of put me off a bit! I've only ever used it on the road and the Egrets Way.

Yeah, I went to an early season superprestige race a couple of years ago when we were staying at a centerparcs nearby, was good fun so I'm dragging a couple of mates over next weekend to do it properly.

Not over to Belgium etc, but I did go and watch the British Nationals up at Ardingly Showground a couple of years ago - great fun and a fantastic course.

You can ride any event you like whilst over there too, and you won't be paying our silly prices either.

£199 for a gravel ride here? Just incredible!

Think I would rather just pay the train fare to Winchester, & take a bivvy with me!
Exactly!

I opened that link and saw the costs! o_O

Typical rip off Britain.

Never mind the wouldn't happen in Germany. It certainly wouldn't happen in Belgium!

Put the money towards a flight to Ottawa: https://www.logdriverswaltz.ca/route-info.html

However, "It must be stressed that the route is entirely unsupported and unsanctioned with no insurance provided. All riders are responsible for their own well-being on the route and ride at their own risk. The route developers assume no responsibility. There is no guarantee of route conditions at any given time. You are entirely responsible for your own safety and decisions that are made including accommodation, necessary detours and being aware that hunting and logging (along with the presence of logging transport) can occur in certain locations at various times of year. If you are not comfortable riding a section of the route take any necessary alternatives or dismount and walk. Planning and due diligence is imperative as is riding within your means"

I could never get my head around the prices on our Sportives, and so have only ever paid to ride Audax events here.

Cyclos in Belgium are excellent value. E3 Harelbeke and Gent Wevelgem are both superb! As are local ones that don't follow a race route.

£199 to ride any event, guided or not, is just madness! Fvck me, we got to ride out with the Lion of Flanders himself in a peloton with motorbikes flanking us on E3 one year  All for about 15 euros I seem to remember!

£199!?

That’s madness. Just follow the crowd and throw a fiver in the bucket at the end.

That's the minimum price too! If you want accommodation thrown in then it pretty much doubles.

Essentially, what you're paying for is the 'guides' and having your luggage carried ahead of you. Which is surely cheating anyway 😉

It's basically the bikepacking version of 'glamping', for those willing and able to pay for it 😂
