Fantastic news. A truly appalling app societally, a breeding ground for predators, “pranksters” committing serious crimes like assault in the name of “content”, encouragement of self harm and suicide amongst impressionable children, and unfiltered mis and disinformation by both the clinically stupid and hostile actors, including hostile nations.

But on a wider point, just terrible for acceptable behaviour in society generally. It is the epitome, the ur-example, the gold standard for self-obsessed ego-centric narcissism. An absolute cess pit of gym selfies, selfish behaviour in the name of generating content and getting clicks and attention.

Oh, and the fact that it is conclusively linked to the Chinese state, with hundreds of millions of people’s data captured by a hostile state.

Good riddance. Ban it here too. In fact, criminalise it.

I'm not on Tik Tok but if I was I'm not sure what the Chinese are likely to learn from my posts.

I do agree generally with the whole of this post @jcdenton08 - and MI5 has consistently warned about the wider issues with China

https://www.mi5.gov.uk/joint-address-by-mi5-and-fbi-heads

......though banning can sometimes have unforeseen outcomes - and frankly it does look like this is more about maintaining the dominance of USA platforms and note FBI involvement in the linked story. It never ceases to amaze me how much our politicians (and many others with proximity to gov and secrets) use WhatsApp given the same worries potentially apply, notwithstanding ownership and control by a yet-to-be-really-tested-in recent-times allied nation.

Trump was behind the banning of Tik Tok originally.
The government were brought on board once law makers saw specific confidential evidence of what Tik Tok were doing with the data of American users.

Unfortunately, Trump is a narcissist and has now seen the data on how Tik Tok helped him win the election. It’ll be back tomorrow and likely, permanently. The CEO is a guest at his inauguration. To hell with protecting the American people if Tik Tok benefits Trump personally.

It will come back stronger tomorrow.

All true and fair enough, Trump is a shit, no shocker there, I’d just like TikTok to f*** off forever for all the reasons I gave in my post, regardless of what Donald Trump or Elon Musk says or does.

Nothing quite like a right wing state to ban people from doing perfectly legal things. Unless it benefits them, of course.

They’re not going to be banning X, for example, and that platform arguably has a ton more to answer for. I wonder why.

I think you’ve misread my post, I don’t use it myself, but I’ve witnessed - as with Twitter/X - the deleterious effect it has had on impressionable people, specifically millions of children.
I haven’t misread it. You proposed making a social media platform illegal.

And parents could parent their children properly and not allow them on them.

Nobody is arguing that lack of parental oversight isn’t an issue, but it is simply a fact of life that children are exposed to harmful content at a very young age, due to peer pressure to have a smart phone, and build friendships outside of school using apps - the main one being TikTok.

  • nine in 10 children own a mobile phone by the time they reach the age of 11.
  • three-quarters of social media users aged between eight and 17 have their own account or profile on at least one of the large platforms.
  • despite most platforms having a minimum age of 13, six in 10 children aged 8 to 12 who use them are signed up with their own profile.
  • almost three-quarters of teenagers between age 13 and 17 have encountered one or more potential harms online.

Specifically regards to TikTok;

According to a 2023 study, 50 percent of kids in the United Kingdom used TikTok, making the short-video sharing platform the most popular social media among users aged between four and 18 years. X (formerly known as Twitter) followed with a reach of 43 percent, while Facebook ranked third with a 40 percent audience reach.

Given TikTok’s constant reprimands over their slow content moderation, thousands of child exploitation and abuse cases stemming from contact via TikTok, Ofcom’s difficulty in getting TikTok to properly enforce age restrictions (despite Prof. Jay’s recommendations and the Online Safety Act) have all played a part.

But as I say, the wider effect on basic respect and human decency is, in my view, being eroded by the likes of TikTok where everyone is encouraged to be self-centred attention seekers, putting themselves and others in dangerous situations on a constant basis in the search of a viral moment.

It’s the worst thing to happen to the internet since Twitter.

The only caveat is that I have never, and would never, 'use' it.
That aside, yes, yes indeed.

Wow. You are a tad obsessive on a football site.
