11 years ago we nearly signed Lewis Grabban - but he just used it as an excuse to get Bournemouth to cough up for a better contract.

Steve Sidwell the first time …. when Madejski had more money and lazily seemed to cash in on our clever succcesses.

Livramento …. August 2021 several reports stated he chose Stains over us.
I think we lost Livramento because Chelsea wanted a £25 million buy back clause. Saints ate that but I could never see TB accepting it.

Lorenzo Pinamonte

Decided to sing for a 'bigger club' (Bentford?) where he flopped.

Meanwhile we turned our attention to Bobby something...

Edit: if we can include Pritch-tard, then Pinamonte seemed much more exciting when he was knocking them in for us while on loan. More exciting than Zamora (for 5 minutes).

Wasn’t that Winfried Schäfer who had managed Cameroon at the 2002 World Cup and we wanted to replace Peter Taylor?
And spookily he is connected with a player mentioned on this thread:

"Although born in London, Grabban is eligible to play for Jamaica in addition to England. In May 2014, it was reported on TV Jamaica that he was called up by German coach Winfried Schäfer to play against Serbia on 26 May 2014 in an international friendly"

It was. DK announced the new manager was about to sign, went to Gatwick to meet Schäfer, who promptly doubled his demands. DK turned him down, but it was then July, so he was in a bit of a pickle asking Martin Hinshelwood to help out!

Not a player but I remember there being some disappointment when we didn't get Jim Gannon.

If he'd joined and been adequate we wouldn't have got Poyet a few months later.

That's a good 'what if'.

The one that came closest to happening, of course, is Ken Armstrong in the summer of 1984. So close, in fact, that he was included in the pre-season squad photo:-

Unfortunately, once the pics had been taken negotiations broke down and he never did sign.

RIP Ken (he passed away two-and-a-half years ago).
