Albion’s last 2pts for a win was the victory against Leeds United at the Goldstone in May 1981, which guaranteed top flight survival.

Long time ago, 44 years 🙈, so the old memory banks are a bit dusty, but did the change to 3pts for a win in August 1981 make the games more open and more exciting, or at least ostensibly the winnable ones? 😂

Had three points for a win been in operation in 1979, Albion would have won Division 2 and Crystal Palace would not have been promoted.

I think it did to an extent. In the 'Old Days' you'd have teams like Jack Charlton's Middlesborough or Bolton under Ian Greaves who would just grind out 0-0 draws. I think it was Ian Greaves who, when quizzed about his sides somewhat boring approach, replied "If fans want entertainment they can go to the circus". A Middlesborough fan of my acquaintance at the time said if you saw Middlesborough score a goal then you didn't go for another four games as you weren't going to see another.

At least when three points came in there was the realisation that winning one and losing one was now better than grinding out two draws.

That's my recollection too. Particularly for teams who were mid table or lower, the home draw particularly became two points lost. So I think the match going fans demanded more and so in turn did boards and then managers. Mike Bailey would probably have still been manager well into 1984 (and us maybe still in the 1st div) if it had stayed 2 points for a win

Your question made me do a bit of research on this and interestingly, the average goals per game in the pre 3pts for a win era, was usually around 2.6 to 2.7 goals per game. After 3pts for a win was introduced, the average surprisingly stayed around this same ratio in most seasons and is still fairly accurate right up to today (apart from this season, where the law of adding 'proper' amounts of extra time for stoppages has catapulted the average to approx 3.2 goals per game !!!!)

I’m 50 in a couple of months. 2 points for a win stopped when I was 6. I barely remember it for League football although it was still being used for Italia 90 so I associate it a lot more with memories of international football.

Or that only two teams went up from Division 2 up to the early 70s. I only found that out recently. I remember re-election.

LA
1976 introduced Goal Difference from Goal Average.
1992-1999 EFL used Goal Scored v Goal Difference (just as well for the Albion in 1997)
