Brighton factually.....
Hello good folks of NSC, the wife is planning a six week vacation with our daughter (probably our last together as she will be leaving school next year) and they are starting in Michigan for two weeks sailing the great lakes with the father in law and then want to fly to Rome, where I will meet them, she then wants to travel to Albania and do some hiking up some mountain to some lake (Stinët), then onto Corfu and then Bilbao. Now I do not have a problem with most of the plan but I hate mountain hiking (father used to take us every week up to the lake district for several year, it traumatised me). What is Albania like, I have been to Croatia and it was very nice, but I am thinking I will be bored out of my tiny mind for four days while they do the hike. Any advise please

Albania used to be great. Very unspoilt and beautiful and really nice people. However the second time (2016) we went we saw a big change in Ksamil - the small fishing village had become a bit of a party town. It was popular with Russian tourist.
I’m sure there are still plenty of unspoilt places - we hired a car in Montenegro and drove which made getting around a lot easier.
it is an interesting country and has great beaches as well as mountain. Also was very cheap then

What if they fly from the USA to Albania then meet you in Rome/Corfu/Bilbao
They have been away for my Birthday for the past four years (Bliss) my daughter really wants to see me on my Birthday which would be in Rome, then it makes sense to go to Albania, Corfu and finish in Spain chillaxing for two weeks (which I kinda need)

A good friend did a 3 month European camper van tour last year. Albania was her favourite place. Corfu is lovely, I have been their many times but is overrun with mosquitos, you will need to take a lot of care or else bitten to pieces.
Be careful you don't go in height of summer. Temperatures getting dangerously hot in June - September and no fun if a heatwave hits you.

Thank you for that, mosquitos love me, and I usually have an allergic reaction to bites and they take ages to go away/down, even with sprays, bracelets etc etc

I loved Albania when I went about 8 years back. Tirana was a fun city to spend a few days in but the highlight for me was Shkoder and hiking in the mountains up there. What do you fancy doing when they're on the hike? I'm sure you could find a nice beach to relax on with a book if that's more your bag.

Supposed to be the Maldives of Europe, isn't it? Looks amazing in the pictures.

Albania is lovely, and very safe. Tirana has lots of old war bunkers / evacuation bunker things which are now museums, cafes, art studios and the like (I think some of them were called 'bunk art') and the cable car to the top of the mountain and the surrounding areas were good for an afternoon out.

You won't be bored, lots of stuff to do in Tirana itself, and if not, the beaches are lovely.

Are mozzies an issue, I do like going to new places, but I just get a really bad reaction to bites.

I get bitten to f..k by mozzies and Corfu has a lot. I've found taking antihistamines (I take cetirizine) for a couple of weeks before going, combined with Chernobyl strength Jungle Formula (you need the one with Deet in it) works ok.

No, I'm the same, bites end up looking like purple nipples! But if I remember rightly, it was fine - I'll caveat that with "it was March" so I'm not the best person to ask really! It was warm though. But prob out of Mozzie season

Alledgedly eating a couple of bananas a day helps as well.

Join the club! There are several places I’d love to go, even the Scottish Highlands etc, but won’t because I suffer so much. Frequently they become infected, on three occasions now I have ended up in hospital on intravenous drips to fight it.

I've been to many, many countries in my time and met some lovely people, but Albanian people have to be right up there
with being the best. Kind, warm-hearted and genuine. Food is great. Tirana is one of the nicest cities; we had a huge meal there and it was
13 quid each. Go - before it becomes too touristy.
