Without using a dictionary or looking up online.

How many of these words do you know?

By know, I mean really know, as in, could use them with ease in a sentence. Any that you've vaguely heard of, but don't really know without looking it up, don't count.

Orcadian.
Peripli.
Skaldic.
Orographic.
Occidental.

Lunulae
Faience
Pibroch
Hawser
Gnomic.

Be honest with your answers. There's no prizes on offer.

None! :ROFLMAO:

I know one vaguely, that's all, but would never have been able to use it in a sentence until I looked it up.

I think I may have cocked the thread up, to be honest. It may be coming across as being a smart arse, but no, I'm not HWT or Zeberdi in disguise.
In fact, I'm trying to see if I'm the only one here that just doesn't know these words from Adam.

They're written in two blocks of five for a reason.

They come from, pretty much, just two double pages in a so called 'bestseller' book I've attempted to read. I got to chapter three, because I've got fvck all better to do with my time at the moment whilst ill, and just thought I'd start writing down my numerous trips to the dictionary.

I was curious to see if it was just me, or if the book (a 'bestseller' remember!) is just way over the head of your average football messageboard user or not. It's not about football btw, but that's not the point.

Gnomic and occidental. Both because I’ve read them in books and not had the faintest bloody clue what they meant, so looked them up. I have certainly never used either in conversation.

Five (orcadian, occidental, pibroch, hawser and gnomic). With the possible exception of gnomic, I couldn't see myself using any of them in a sentence.
Fair play (y)

Isn't Orcadian to do with the Orkneys and Occidental something to do with the West. So are the top five all population based?

Four out of ten. Thought I could have made five, by making an educated guess on Gnomic, but looked it up and my educated guess was wrong!

3 for me.

Orcadian (helped by the fact I watched a related film the other day).

Occidental (Everyone knows that, right?)

Gnomic
Occidental is the one on the list, that once I'd looked it up, there was a brief flicker of recognition.

Gnomic, I initially thought was mnemonic. Having read that earlier on in the book.

Needless to say, having really tried for three chapters, I won't be picking the book up again, as life is just too short!

I'm still puzzled by the 'bestseller' tag, mind.

Assuming Occidental was your other one?

What are the other two?

Correct. (y)

See post 8 as to why I've written them in two blocks of five. They're not necessarily connected, although they're from the same chapter in a work of fiction.
