Surprised us all when he came in and did so well at the start of the season, after unspectacular (putting it kindly) loans last season. But he did come in, and did well - well done that lad, and good luck to him. Will - and should - get more game time; not a regular starter, not yet anyway, but has proved he can do a job.

Agreed. I'm a fan of his. Nice to see yet another "Player X isn't good enough thread" either started or bounced. How many are we up to this week? 18?

Was part of the best 45 mins our midfield have had this season, away at Liverpool, with Hinchelwood.

But that’s probably because we actually played two proper CMs. On Friday, and I appreciate I might have been ball watching, every time I noticed O’Riley it was because he was playing “not central midfield”.

Agree with NAN, needs a goal for confidence.

He'll be a bit disappointed he hasn't found a goal or two from the chances he's had but other than that there's enough there for me to see why we shipped out Facundo on loan and kept him.

Meh. People said the same things about Alexis Mac Allister. Quite literally the same things. "Don't notice him", "too small" and so forth.
I know he was with us for about 18 months before his breakthrough season, but I don’t remember this being said about Mac ever.

Ali Mac had plenty of hype in the first six months or so after his first quite solid game (against Wolves just before covid IIRC).

In the coming season that faded and there was a lot of "too lightweight", "don't notice him in games" and so forth until this beautiful game in January 2022:

After that there was no longer any doubters.

Who knows, maybe Ayari can give us something like that tomorrow?

Ayari has shown enough to be in and around first team action. That said, i've seen us be duffed up by Villa one too many times, so I want more, experience, nous and bulk in there. I'd start him v Arsenal

If we want to achieve anything he’s not good enough. If we want mid table play him.
I guess the question is, is he the best option available for selection in any given game.

And I think the answer is yes. I think Hinsh and Baleba are our best two midfielders. But with Hinsh out, the question becomes does he offer more than Wieffer and O'Riley. On the evidence of this season so far, I would say that's a tight selection call, but in games where there is likely to be some open spaces, Ayari has shown more. In a tight battling game, like Palace, one of the others is probably a better bet

.. I’m looking for the emoji for “putting your hand up” or possibly “whistling innocently “

O’Riely’s passing was excellent last night had him down with Gruda as two of our more accomplished players. Also that was a really good save from the Keeper O’Riely’s shot was goal bound.
O’Riely is a good player he has to keep playing him.

My unscientific assessment is that Ayari is most likely to provide a killer pass, O’Riley to be the most willing runner, Wieffer the physically strongest/most defensively minded, and Hinshelwood the best all-rounder.

I haven’t looked at the stats to see if that’s borne out by the data, just gut feel from what I’ve seen, which is fairly worthless as is most anecdotal evidence. If correct, it suggests that the manager has options to choose from depending on the type of game it is.

Sums up where the club is at. You notice him when he’s subbed on or off.

Not a top flight player.
I thought the exact same. He's still young so he has time to develop but at this current moment, he is not of Premier League standard. I don't notice him on the pitch at all, I do notice other midfielders like Baleba (because he is willing to track back and put a tackle in). Needs to up his game but I'm more concerned about the experienced players who also need to up their game.

He is an inferior Buonanotte. Similar in style - too lightweight , sluggish in pace with little end product. However, I do remember Buonanotte scoring a few goals. If Ayari could shoot straight in the last two games we might have an extra 4 points.
