Impossible imho to pick from Bessie Smith, Aretha, Karen Carpenter and Dusty Springfield. All angelic. Diana Ross too, goosebumps listening to her 60’s and early 70’s gems.
Diana Ross?!! Worst singer in the Supremes. Don't like the critique of women sleeping their way to the top, but it seems undeniable in her case. I remember an interview with, the much more talented, Martha Reeves that made that absolutely clear. She pretty much said it was an open secret among everybody working at Motown.

There is only one answer. Both Dusty with 'Son of a Preacher Man' and Dionne Warwick with 'Say a Little Prayer' suffered being covered by Aretha Franklin. Almost a power move to show the gap between her and any possible rivals.

I saw Sam Brown doing the vocal solo for the great gig in the sky, hands down the best vocal performance I have ever seen.
