Well the episode is actually called Joy to the World... and it's tomorrow. Details here for Whovians.

However, an old friend of mine was looking around town for a vegan panettone today, and upon sharing it has morphed into discussion about a new Dr Who villain.

The Vegan Panettone definitely sounds like a character circa 1973/74. A seemingly benign monster that comes to the earth to warn of pending doom, only to be the attempted architect. It hoodwinks Sarah-Jane under its spell and charm, slowly taking over minds and bodies with a seemingly omnipotent presence.

This script definitely needs finishing. It must have been expelled. As there appears to be no vegan panettone in Brighton today.

I've given up on Doctor Who. I suppose the question i am asking is, is it worth picking up again?

Me and my eldest love a bit of Sci fi but ended up laughing at the obvious gammon baiting and lack of storyline in the Tennant special last year. We then watched Ncuti Gatwa's first one and turned it off when he said "Space babies" for the millionth time and decided the alien was nice after all and haven't watched since.

Is it worth watching or have we just been a bit unlucky?

The new Doctor has been a bit hit and miss for me, will give the Crimbo one a go though as its tradition. However, tradition usually means the crimbo episode is a bit twee, lightweight and meh.

I thought that was excellent. Something in my eye and all that.

The bollock-kick reference to early Covid was well played.

I'm liking the new doc and the general mojo.

It wasn't particularly twee this year, especially if you've lost a parent around Christmas
I had some kind of transmitter problem while watching it which pixelated the visuals and silenced the dialogue off and on for 10 minutes or so. From what I saw it was better than I expected and I will rewatch later today on the iplayer.

I really liked it, best episode in ages and one of the better Christmas specials.
The best of "New Who" was the Russel T Davis show running, and Moffat writting. If they have that combo again for the next series it could get the show back to being very good

Was that Biscuit Barrel about an hour or so ago on BBC Breakfast, talking about an old episode with Patrick Troughton being turned into colour ?

It is better than the Chibnall era which was Auntie Beeb at her preachy worst. And having waded through all the Hartnell and Troughton episodes on iPlayer I can say with authority that it is WAY better than when the show started.

I quite enjoyed the Christmas one, and it had a nice twist at the end, but it did have a lot of padding.

I am wading through all the past episodes and am deep into Tom Baker presently. I found the earlier (Hartnell) scrips both quite adult and yet patronizing sexist and dated. The Tom Baker is much better than I remembered it. He is absolutely brilliant. Sarah-Jane's gurning is still irritating, but now I know that in the 40 years that followed she had absolutely no career as an actress till she was reunited with the world of Who, I'm prepared to cut her a bit of slack. Anyway, I just watched her exit so we move on.

Some years ago Mrs T worked for a publisher in Oxford. They had a visit from Tom Baker. And yes, he did offer her a jelly baby.

Good to see the old bugger is still alive.

Ha! Yeah, I think we've touched on this before as I know you too have been working through the back catalogue. I've just started the Troughton Pertwee era and I have to say the jump in quality is considerable, and it's in colour of course. Looking forward to getting to Tom Baker.

PS - I see the BBC also did a colorised, edited version of The War Games (final Troughton series). I've recorded it, so I'll watch it soon. Edited down to 90 minutes, which is about what it should have been.

EDIT: Just re-read it and realised I'd made a mistake (Pertwee not Troughton), although I'm sure HWT knew what I meant.

The colorised edited version of The War Games is absolutely stunning. The pacing after the edit, the cleaned up sound, the brilliant colorization, the added extra scene....you'll love it

I have decided that Doctor Who isn't a show I enjoy any more.

So I have given up on it. I will still watch any future dalek episodes for now. But only these, as I hope they can't do too much damage to them.

The last series was 8 episodes - I enjoyed only 1 of them. 3 were OK, and 4 ( 50% of them ) were execrable [ including an utterly abysmal series finale ].

There is simply no point in watching a program with a 50% chance I'll dislike an episode.

Can someone provide me with a link to the colourised version of War Games in IPlayer ? I've gone a little BGRIP in my ability to source it.
