I don't think anybody is really suggesting a surge means leaping from seat to seat forwards and ending up in a heap 10 rows forward. A surge in seated stadium away end is more to do with people leaning forward as play goes on towards the goal and as the ball hits the net you can be unbalanced so you may end up scraping your shins up the seat in front and nudging the person in from of you, or being nudged from behind into the person in front. My main memory of a modern day "surge" was Forest away and the Ulloa goal, everybody had bruised shins from that goal. I have on time had somebody from the row behind end up in my row on the floor.

The problem is some fans are not bright enough or socially astute enough to treat people around them with respect, back in the 80's you always felt that traveling to games around the country Brighton fans looked out for one another irrespective of who they were both in grounds and travelling to the games and home again afterwards. Nowadays this doesn't happen much IMO, fans might look after there mates they travel with but anybody else doesn't matter.

Regarding your very last sentence.....I have found some of this 'limbs' stuff to be a bit contrived. I'm all for celebrating but some of it looks like people are trying too hard to celebrate and does not look natural. A bit like Boxpark when a goal is scored, and people getting their phones out before they film themselves celebrating.
Yep. It's called 'wankers'.

It's not a f***ing Coldplay gig.

I don't quite understand why the club don't just track down and punish the individual(s) concerned like they did in Marseille. CCTV, tickets and seat numbers etc

The problem is a lot of them won't be in their allocated seats. I can see a time when fans have to upload a passport photo when registering with the club.

I get what you’re saying, but the only way to make the passing on away ticket rule workable is to apply the rules regardless. Otherwise everyone will have a hard luck story….in fact virtually everyone who gets caught doing anything wrong has a hard luck story as to why they did what they did.
I get the logic of what they did on the away ticket front even if I don't necessarily agree with how they went about it in some cases. I just want them to be sensible with any punishment here. By all means sort the bell cheeses out. Just don't punish some poor sod stuck in the aisle because his train was late and they are an easy target.

This shouldn't be an issue at West Ham as there is plenty of room even if the view is shit so it should be a perfect opportunity for a "dickheads only" enforcement policy.

This sort of scenario is where I have a concern.

When the away ticket passing on furore took off, there was a case on here - if memory serves - where a bloke got a 50 point deduction and 10 game ban because he passed the ticket on from one son to another who couldn't make it because the trains were on strike. There was no leniency shown between what appeared genuine stories and some of the more "Jimmy Hill" or dog ate my homework ones.

The email is clearly a warning. If the genuine knobs are taking over 7 seats when they've booked 3 and the regular punters spills into the aisle, I hope I'm not reading hard luck stories from decent away fans that the aisle Gestapo have caught up with them and issued draconian punishment. We've got form for being a bit over zealous previously.

For clarity, By all means punish the absolute bell ends. The bloke at Marseille and types like that springs to mind. And yeah, everyone should absolutely sit -well, stand, in their seat (unless it hasn't sold out).
I might be thinking of a different case but I thought the one that got the attention was because the son bought a ticket for his girlfriend using his dad's fan number without him knowing. His dad took the punishment because he didn't want to pass it on to his kid! There was no need for leniency.

I'll leave the thread on topic as we could disappear down that rabbit hole for a long time. It wasn't my intent to kick those arguments off again but just to point out that there some relatively harsh penalties for people that were on the petty thief rather than drug running types of crime scale.

It'll be interesting to see what if anything changes on Saturday.

Very much this and I suspect all those complaining about the club message are in the latter and also the ones banging on about the home atmosphere and trying to lecture us all about the manner in which we should watch football. They are going to get a nasty shock when the safe standing area in the North doesn't turn it into the Dortmund home end.

What is it about Fulham that attracts our prime twats? One of Potter's last games was a complete nightmare. Five lads utterly wankered ( and one who looked coked up) spent virtually the whole game throwing abuse and making cut throat gestures to the home fans to our right. Said Fulham fans were mainly families and not remotely interested in ' engaging '. Finally one of my mates lost patience and enquired ' any chance you might actually watch the game ?". To which the coked up one squared up to my mate virtually frothing at the mouth.
I’m not a Neanderthal and I thought the email from the club was patronising.

It’s not a majority of fans, who do behave themselves. The ones they’re talking about won’t change - that’s their mindset.

People need to be at their seat and the stewards need to enforce it. At Fulham, in the section we were in, there was just one steward covering the area between the pitch and the back of the stand.
Stamford Bridge last year there was an issue with an obnoxious thug (Brighton) who was stood in an aisle. A young steward came up and told him he needed to move out of the aisle. The Brighton thug got right in the young stewards face and in no uncertain terms told him to f*ck off as he wanted top watch the game. This went on for a while until the young steward left and came back with an older, stockier and more senior steward that told the thug that if he didn't move he would be removed from the stadium. Thug tried to continue his protest with shocking language as he didn't want to be seen to comply ... but eventually he did. In my mind, he'd been given far too many chances and should have been kicked out.

At the likes of Everton, many of the stewards seem to be experienced old boys that just seem to have a way of dealing with things in a calm manner.

Personally, I think there needs to be visible Brighton stewards as hopefully they would be respected more than some of the 'youngsters' with no real authority you get at many grounds.

The club applied sanctions but the problem persists. Sledgehammer, nut etc.

So they're giving the 'minority' that won't change a warning - contained in the email with an away ticket. So no excuses if they either didn't read it or they decide they can continue with the same behaviour... in which case they should face the consequences.

They don't need to be, the club can use facial recognition technology.

Deal with them then, I don’t want to get that sort of school field trip day out email from BHAFC.

So much of that behaviour is seen across the country so they need to deal with the specific behaviour they find outside the scope of ‘reasonable’ otherwise they’ll have to start ejecting people from the family stand at the Amex every time a player celebrates over there.

Ticket sharing - still occurs.
Crowd exuberance - will still occur
Smoking etc in toilets - still happening

Deal with the illegal shit first and really anti social shit first. But stop the nanny state stuff that the club will sanction fans for just because it offends them.

At Liverpool one of the fans who was sent back to his seat (from the aisle) was Gruda’s old man. Do we start making exceptions?

Surges aren’t exactly a new phenomenon and I think some of the older posters are forgetting’83 when Jimmy Case caused 2 incredible surges. I was young and it was joyous. Beer luzzing on the other hand is just weird.

It really depends what you define as " crowd exuberance" ? And are you actually dismissing ticket sharing as an issue? There is no doubt that the club does need an efficient mechanism by which you can pass on your away ticket if you suddenly can't make the game rather than having to write it off. However, you may recall that when the club decided to come down hard on the ticket sharing it had been prompted by a number of arrests of people who should not have had a ticket. It seemed there was a propensity for tickets to be given to dick heads and all fans ended up paying the price.

I don’t get offended by a general communication when it doesn’t apply to me. In fact I see it as a good thing that the club are raising awareness of the problems some ‘fans’ are causing and that there will be consequences.

And this isn’t about the club looking to punish normal exuberant behaviour.

What is normal exuberant behaviour?
