Allegations about the Smyth cover-up have been in Private Eye for years (as were allegations about Fayed, Post Office and others). Shame that no serious action is taken until the story hits main stream media.

This stuff makes me so angry. So the guy supposed to be taking over is now set to be ousted for covering up another nonce. Reading the BBC timeline for what David Tudor did is nothing short of disgraceful. I'm not religious but have no issue with the church however I can't see how it can even start to defend itself with so many deviants. The new ABofC really ought to just say root and branch anyone with any background of offending will be removed without question.

anyone who knows anything concrete about these perverted, disgusting people who are hiding behind the cloth, and who doesn’t volunteer and out them should face prosecution themselves. Not sure if it would be deemed as perverting the course of justice or not but there must be some crime committed in keeping shtum

“Supposed to be taking over….” The current Archbishop of York is supposed to be “stepping up”. The permanent replacement will take months to sort out, and has to be approved by the Prime Minister’s Office, which gets to choose from a short list of two.
i think it should be a woman, who would be more likely to take all this seriously!
Some years ago, when Thatcher was PM, the final two were a fairly political bishop (which is who the Church wanted), and a “joke” candidate who they presumed would be unchoosable! They chose the unchoosable…… and I have heard this from two very creditable sources. The candidate who wasn’t chosen had something to do with Sussex Cricket in the past………. And England……. And Cambridge. Oh, what a give-away.

The Roman Catholic Church has an even worse record. They didn’t even sack priests accused of abuse, they were just moved to a different Parish. Millions of kids (and girls included) abused worldwide.
It’s important for people to realise that the Church is not made up of any more perfect people than anywhere else in society but that’s not what happens, people have this idea that just because ‘Christians’ preach a message of salvation, they themselves are flawless. Then people get abused, hear of others being abused and the faithless never find faith and the faithful lose it because some these Christians are very far from perfect.
All very sad.
Please don't think that I'm saying that this sort of thing doesn't happen these days - I'm not.
But there was a (hopefully positive) step-change in the late 1990s with the introduction of the Protection of Children Act 1999. The youth organisation I was involved with at that time adopted revised practices in accordance with the Act and the associated guidance. I think that a lot of the cases of abuse that we read about in the news stem from the 1960s/70s/80s. So I hope that there are now far fewer opportunities for such abuse to take place in churches/youth clubs etc. Sadly we probably won't know if/how effective the Act has been until another couple of decades have passed.
A few examples below if you want some more detail:
1. requirement of CRB (later DBS) certificates (yes, I know they could be considered as "Not been caught yet" certificates) as the first step in filtering out undesirables.
2. youth organisations were guided, although not actually mandated by law I believe, to not organise any activities where one adult could be left alone with children without another adult present. This move also had the advantage of providing some protection of innocent adults if a child wanted to make false accusations. Although this meant our resources of helpers/leaders were stretched we re-arranged timetables and premises to achieve this. And little things like if you're doing a class in a small meeting room (e.g. chess, map-reading etc) leave the door open to the corridor. It was also about giving confidence to the parents that we were safeguarding their children.
3 IIRC each organisation had to appoint a head of safeguarding (can't remember the official terminology) to oversee compliance.
4 Training and awareness of risks for all the 'good' adults (some of whom would have been somewhat naive).

Out of interest, has any journo asked Welby whether he is aware of any similar cases? Same question the Archbishop of York. What else have they been hiding away?

The old boy network and secrecy around governance in the C of E is slowly being exposed showing a group of men at the top who are protecting their own to preserve the church’s reputation at the expense of victims.
only one Bishop has spoken out, a woman, and she has been sidelined. I think that is telling about the competence and morality of those in power, it’s time for a major rehaul. A lot more Bishops and senior clergy are going to be drawn into this mess In the next few weeks.
It will be interesting to see if the institution prevails or wether the truth will out those responsible for covering up safeguarding failures.
