Cricket commentator Isa Guha has apologised for calling Indian bowler Jasprit Bumrah the "most valuable primate" during the third Test against Australia.

From the BBC
Guha responded: "Well, he's the MVP, isn't he? [The] most valuable primate

Did she actually say ‘primate’

I genuinely thought MVP meant Most valuable Player?

If you commentate enough you're bound to say something dumb eventually.

As long as there's not a pattern in her history, move on
This really. Context and intent. Folks don't so much get upset as love a good pile on. There's a lot of emotional stimulation in getting angry about stuff.

Would it have been acceptable if she had said it about Ian Bishop?
Depends if he is an Anglican bishop or not. That would then make him a Primate.

So she’s a sports commentator using an acronym associated then with valuable players and you think she’s referring to a movie series? You’re wooshing me aren’t you?
So you think she's making a racist comment about the player?

Ok thanks for posting a link, did she use the word ‘Primate’ or just the acronym?
Well the BBC have used quotation marks in the article, if she didn't say it they would be in big trouble:

Guha responded: "Well, he's the MVP, isn't he? [The] most valuable primate, Jasprit Bumrah. He is the one that's going to do all the talking for India, and why so much focus was on him in the build-up to this Test match, and whether he would be fit."

So she’s thinking one thing and said another - loosely connected - that popped into her head (we’ve all done it), which in this case had unfortunate connotations……..if the MVP series had been a Masterchef spin-off about Puddings and she’d said ‘most valuable pudding’ it would have been laughed off. She’s from Indian heritage herself. Storm in a teacup with people desperate to be offended. She’s apologised - that should be the end of it

Nope neither whooshing or joking. I don't think the thing I said is likely, however it was exactly the acronym that was mentioned so in my opinion it had context. Feel free to ignore or deride.
