Instead of having the summer off he was called to England duty, rightly, Pointless as it tuned out but he still had to be there. That hasn’t helped him and we are suffering because of that. He is the best ball playing CB imo and completely wasted on Southgate who much preferred “head the ball” Maguire. Class always tells and he will come through this. We are not a one man team and Dunk is well worth his place. A bit of perspective is required here.

I think that currently Dunk is only in the side as he is captain.

The form that Van Hecke and Igor were in, while Dunk was out injured, demanded that the partnership should have stayed in place. Any other player would have come back to the bench and stayed there, until an opportunity due to injury, suspension or loss of form provided an opportunity to start.

Instead we bring Dunk on, and push Van Hecke to right back for a few minutes, and then next game Dunk starts.

I can't see it happening but FH needs to make the strong decision and drop Dunk to the bench.

The positives from this, we get a better pairing back on the pitch, and sends a clear message to everyone, play well or someone else will be given the chance to stay in the team.

He doesn't seem to be able to work under FH. He has been poor all season! No defined pattern of play! He knew what RDZ wanted neither he or FH have a clue what the plan is at the moment!
If Fabian’s team talks are anything like his pre and post match comments I imagine Dunky drifts off whilst being spoken to, dull doesn’t cover it, trust the process :lolol:

I was thinking about this earlier. I do fear his best days are behind him. Something that, understandably, will always take a long time for us to come to terms with.

Sussex but not by the sea
It’s not just the defending, he slows us down in possession too. I’m struggling to remember a worse showing from TWO Albion CBs in the same game, in any league. We were actually ‘alright’ in most other areas today but if BOTH your CBs play like that then you’ve got no chance.

Igor was making some serious errors, the latest at Leicester, he was also at fault for the Southampton equaliser. He lost his place more likely because of positional and othererrors in games rather than Dunk’s status as captain.

Dunk is finding his feet after a long injury lay-off for him, not that surprising he isn’t fully match fit yet, but unlike Igor’s error at Leicester when we were largely the better side, today we were well short collectively.

You don't go from being a top player for us in Europe and England in the Euros to a liability in the space of 6 months.

But I suspect being dropped by England, speculation about Boscagli, injury, a new manager, lack of time off and father time have all played their part. We need another CB in the window to help this situation because he is struggling now. I'm not writing him off just yet, I fancy once he's adjusted mentally he'll kick on again.

He doesn't feel like "Mr. Dependable" at the back and has recently seemed quite unreliable. In my opinion, Van Hecke is Dunk's successor; he and Igor have built a good partnership. However, in all honesty, it feels like our defence as a whole has fallen off a cliff and we are conceding a concerning number of goals, no matter who's in our backline. Fabian Hurzeler has a tough task on his hands.

It’s actually incredible that we have a fabled data based recruitment system, and had £200m to spend and yet most of us were saying we needed a new Cb and a new Rb and we didnt sign either
We spent £30m on a right back.

We have Dunk, Van Hecke, Webster, Veltman and Igor for CB and while I'm sure we tried to replace Igor with another player, its difficult to find buyers for these players, with the exception of Van Hecke who is our best CB and therefore someone we wanted to keep for another year.

Tough luck but can sometimes be the case with long contracts or failed signings.

When Veltman moves to Amsterdam next summer, Van Hecke heads to a big club and Igor is hopefully sold to somewhere, I think we will see two or three CBs coming to battle with Dunk and Webster.

Duffy and Veltman when we lost 3-0 at home to Burnley

The truth is the recruitment team went absolutely crazy signing attacking midfielders/10s (so many of them lightweight) that we’ve had to punt Fac out and maybe Julio next. And they completely forgot about quick, strong defenders. Bit incompetent really

As if today couldn’t get sadder .
