I think I prefer this stuff to be handled out of the public eye.

Mullery certainly did it often. Especially calling Moseley out, nearly ruining his career.

It’s not likely to make a player want to improve for you is it, when the manager does a tv interview and just rags you out? Quite often it gets said with the caveat that the player agrees and I always think that’s a dodgy move for managing players… well he hasn’t played to the level that we expect and he’ll be the first to tell you that he can do better.

Best kept to the dressing room and managers office

It’s generally not a good idea. In cases like Werner’s it must’ve been very apparent to those watching that he was having a shocking game, and his half time withdrawal reinforcing that, so speaking to the media is superfluous. If asked a simple “it wasn’t working tonight, so I made a change to benefit the team” would’ve sufficed.

Conversations like that should have in the dressing room or before and after training afterwards, not via the press.

Strikes me as a man under pressure and making emotional mistakes.

There are certainly some players who will react to that by knuckling down and being determined to prove the manager wrong.

But I suspect the majority would not take that kind of public dressing down well at all. They'd down tools and be looking to GTFO of that toxicity.

Where does Timo fall? No idea. Presumably Ange believes this kick in the ass will motivate him. He may be right. Or he might be wrong. It's certainly a risky move.

Well at Stoke away in the cup -Pedro got called over for some diggins/encouragement and it worked , Baleba was subbed and RDZ didnt even look at him .........we went on to win that .........pedro scored of course

I think I prefer this stuff to be handled out of the public eye.

The only recollection I have, but is of Graham Potter calling Júrgen Locadia out at an Albion Christmas party.
As I recall, Potter had requested Breathe Again by Tony Braxton, to which Locadia told him to **** off.

I reckon a manager calling a player out publicly is OK, if, and only if. The players attitude stinks, you've given him the feedback, he's not listened, he's playing crap, but you sort of have to play him because of injury crisis.

If these are the facts, and I clearly don't know that they are, then go on Ange, hang the fella out to dry.

But I can't escape the idea that he should just drop him if he's that bad and develop one of the teenagers they've been spending big money on

RDZ made some pointed comments publicly about Baleba, Fati and especially Sanchez.

One of the things that I really disliked about him, he was always ready to talk shit to the press.

I don’t agree with it but Werner was absolutely abysmal last night so I can see why a manager who’s on the edge already and totally out of his depth anyway would lose his rag and resort to that. Mate.

In the LW position, that would be Wilson Odobert, a summer signing who turned 20 last month (and scored against us for Burnley last season), but he's out indefinitely with a hamstring injury. (Which reminds me Tottenham have been linked with Adingra!)

The other young big money signings are Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall and they've been getting a lot of minutes in Europe, less so in the PL - then again Tottenham's depth in their positions hasn't been hit as badly by injuries.
