Aliens, of course.

Not mentioned yet but I've also enjoyed repeat plays of:

Prey (best of the Predator films since the original imo)

The Black Hole (loved this more than any of the Star Wars when I saw it at the cinema as a child. Nice and dark)
I read somewhere years ago, that the Black Hole was the first Disney movie to make a significant loss at the box office.

Another shout-out for Silent Running, one of my favourites. Amazing to think that 2001: was made before the first moon landing.

That seems unlikely, given it made $35m at the box office on a $20m budget (+$6m for advertising).

It was apparently the first Disney film to be rated PG.

Are you confusing it with the Black Cauldron, which did make a massive loss on release a few years later?

Agreed but I think you had to have read the book first to get what was going on at the end. The intro and the first few mins are up there with my all time favourite goose bump moments in a film.

The original Planet of The Apes blew me away when it came out. Been somewhat diluted by the shite follow ups though
I'm not convinced that fully understanding the end of 2001 A Space Odyssey would add to it. I like the ambiguity.

Unless it means I can guess next week's lottery numbers, that would be handy.

The Empire Strikes Back, my favourite film.

Also worth a mention are The Andromeda Strain, and Saturn 3.
I maintain that Star Wars (i.e. the first one) is the best of the Star Wars films.

It's the most fun, it tells a whole story (you don't have to watch Return of the Jedi to complete the story like you do Empire Strikes Back), and there's none of the brother/sister "I am your father" back story cluttering up the place.

Brilliant. Love Criswell’s introduction;

“Greetings, my friend. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives.”

Profound stuff

Anyone else struggle to get lost in fiction?

I find unless it's a doc, or based on true events I simply can't get hooked as I just keep thinking "there's an adult pretending he can fly. How silly"

Comedy is different as the absurdity is meant to be funny.

I get this is my issue.
