Nothing wrong with a tenuous sci fi link. I'm currently rereading the Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson. In The Martian their ship the Ares, is a nod to the Mars Trilogy, as their ship is also called the Ares. Some might consider the Mars Trilogy an effort as they're 3 big books, but I can honestly say they are worth it. I absolutely love them. KSR is so logical in how everything unfolds, it seems completely plausible.

Will definitely have a look at those.

Big fan of the genre and in favour of pretty much all of the films mentioned.

Keep meaning to give Interstellar another go. Saw it when it came out and it didn't think much of it. I'm probably wrong.

A few off the top of my head I've not seen mentioned that I rate very highly.

Forbidden Planet
Stalker
This Island Earth
Invasion Of The Bodysnatchers (70s one)
Ex Machina
Under The Skin
Akira
All the Quatermass films

Goldstone1976

I love Sci Fi. The 'hard'er the better.

Many of the film I like have already been mentioned, but one that immediately springs to mind that has not is:

Primer

You need to have your wits about you when you watch it, and it'll probably take you multiple viewings to get all that's going on (or a cheat look at a plot map - the easiest one to find has an error in it, I think), but I loved it.

Arrival is because of the aliens and also her daughter hannah which itself is very clever. Their first hug, " I'd forgotten how good it was to be hugged by you " The most intelligent film I have seen

Terminator 2, although it straddles science fiction and action. A brilliant film with some of the best special effects ever (and they still hold up today, despite their age)
Terminator 1 was excellent as well as it was a low-budget film compared to the sequels.
Arnie is perfectly cast as a robot. The famous line' I'll be back ' was in this movie.

We just watched Romulus thought the age of the cast might be a teens film but well worth a watch.
