Terminator 2, although it straddles science fiction and action. A brilliant film with some of the best special effects ever (and they still hold up today, despite their age)
Quite incredible when you compare the special effects of the movies in the early 90s (fantastic) to the CGI 7 Dwarves on show in the trailer for the live action Snow White movie (it's so bad somebody should probably be fired)

Oh don’t get me started on that whole debacle. I would definitely upset many posters here with my views on that absolute farce. But let’s not get OT….

All the Aliens

In addition to many already mentioned, I'd add in no particular order or level of cerebral complexity ( I enjoy some of these just for the fun ride or feel good factor )

12 Monkeys
Looper
The Fifth Element
Lucy
Ad Astra
The Adjustment Bureau

2001: A Space Odyssey

It’s hard to beat this.
Agreed but I think you had to have read the book first to get what was going on at the end. The intro and the first few mins are up there with my all time favourite goose bump moments in a film.

The original Planet of The Apes blew me away when it came out. Been somewhat diluted by the shite follow ups though

Oh and "The Martian" as well, which is excellent.

A tenuous link, but also loved the book " The Martian Chronicles" and the TV series from the 70s/80s.

Have tried over the years to find a physical copy or on a streaming platform and sadly nowhere to be found.

I think the new(er) trilogy are very good. The fourth one was OK but not great. Just seemed like they didn't need to make a fourth one as the trilogy told a complete story.

Agree on the older ones though. All got a bit silly.

Conquest for the Ruins of the Empire of the Moon of the Planet of the Apes or some such nonsense.

Best Sci-Fi ?
Probably The Sound of Music…. although I must confess to not understanding the ending totally.

Alien 1,2 and 3 (the rest are gash).
Not so sure about 3 but 1 and 2 are superb.

This thread is like the opposite of the Christmas film one, where almost every film named I already know is shite or sounds shite. I would have said that I don't really like sci-fi and then I see film after film being named that I loved. Arrival the best for me. Also Bladerunner, The Martian and Galaxy quest. Oh and Life of Brian.

Nothing wrong with a tenuous sci fi link. I'm currently rereading the Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson. In The Martian their ship the Ares, is a nod to the Mars Trilogy, as their ship is also called the Ares. Some might consider the Mars Trilogy an effort as they're 3 big books, but I can honestly say they are worth it. I absolutely love them. KSR is so logical in how everything unfolds, it seems completely plausible.
