[Albion] No Veltman, no party

Agree. One of my favourite players, and for a reason.

More often than not we lose without him in the team. Knows instinctively how to defend , but also to help the players around him.

Always nervous when he's not in the team.

May be controversial, but far more so than any other defender these days.

Yes we need Veltman but Dunky had a good game today and VH made some important blocks. Not great communication between Bart and the FBs though.

Lamptey again, brilliant going forward but …. meh

It worries me that in a squad this size, we only have one decent RB. Or one and a half, if you count Jack.

Three horrific games at the back. Three games without JV. Not a coincidence IMO. We need his leadership and housery. Let’s hope he’s back for Palace. Without him we can’t defend.
This bad run has really highlighted how much we rely on him, particularly for game management.

Deepest, darkest Sussex
Also worth noting we truly went to pot when we switched to three at the back

Little to do with leadership, or systems, or bottle. More to do with Igor being a stupid complacent cock.
We’ve now done this TWICE and in both cases we conceded soft first goals to let the opposition in. I don’t think we should have won this and Wolves 2-1. We should have won both 2-0.

And you’re ignoring the two previous games where Bart was at fault for one goal (from a poor Igor pass admittedly), couldn’t defend a corner, let Alex effing Iwobi dribble through us and looked like a League One defence against Southampton.

Kadioglu, Veltman, Hinshelwood, Lamptey.

Yes, three of them are injured, but I thought Tariq had a good game today.

We capitulated. For me, this is a psychological frailty, not a physical one. Our squad is not the problem here, it’s our headless chicken reaction to a late goal against us that made the second goal inevitable.

Neither Dunk nor the management seemed able to calm nerves and point out that if we played like we had for the first 85 minutes, we’d win the game. Instead we went all out for a lockdown, which (to my mind) always triggers the opposite.

Hopefully a lesson learned today.

I’m not ignoring anything - I’m just commenting on the single act that threw away these latest points.

This thread is a little bit bizarre - it's the classic example of a non-playing footballer going up in the estimation of fans when they miss out on a bad result or performance by the team.

You have highlighted the fact that Albion have now drawn two games this season, having led 2-0 late in the match - well, guess what, Veltman was on the pitch for the entire 90 minutes in that Wolves game.

Our issues today weren't at right-back, and we almost certainly wouldn't have scored our first goal with Veltman on the pitch (instead of Lamptey).

We’ve conceded six goals in the three games he’s missed and it should have been seven. At Fulham we basically played with no right back at all.

Yep. Igor is not the wider problem...
