I say 6, but I basically hit the ball back to the bowler, but got called for a run anyway, I should have been run out by a country mile, but the bowler throw the ball, which missed the stumps. We completed a second run, before the ball went over the boundary, to gain 4 over throws and in the score book it went down as a 6.

For those who don't know it's a cross-country marathon around Lewes, the 26+ miles taking in several steep climbs, boggy muddy fields, slippery chalk etc. In 2018 it was close to being cancelled with snow on the ground, sub-zero temperatures, ice, and strong wind, with gusts at 40+mph particularly on the exposed stretch from Southease to Firle Beacon, and windchill taking those subzero temperatures to extremes.

I'd trained harder for it than I'd trained for anything before and agreed with my mate that even if the race was officially cancelled we'd still run the route together, but it went ahead, with around 250 of us running. After 24 miles or so I was on my own and coming down from Mount Caburn and could see no-one else in the fields or on the white icy hills, and had a strong sense of peace and that this was a moment to always remember. And despite the ridiculous weather, the exhaustion, the challenge of the whole thing, as I entered Lewes for the finish at Harveys Brewery between 4 and 5 hours after I'd started I didn't want it to end. Truly a sense of being part of something remarkable and unique. I've run it 4 times now and it's always a special event, but that one will never be matched.

Another special memory is my first marathon, which was London in 1993. Somewhere maybe around 20 miles in there was a tunnel, the only sound was the stickiness of people's trainers on the concrete as we'd run through a big Lucozade drink-station spillage. I was in the fancy dress stragglers at the 4h30m finish kind of pace, someone tried and failed to get a chant going of "if you're happy and you know it clap your hands" and then a bloke dressed as Pavarotti with speakers and a walkman hidden in his costume started playing Nessun Dorma. I don't reckon I'll ever forget that echoing around and the emotion brought on by the tiredness too. Epic. A couple of miles later my Mum called out from the crowd - she'd managed to get away from other responsibilities and travelled up to London, a 3 hour round trip, literally for the 30 seconds of seeing me go past to shout encouragement. Makes me emotional just remembering.

That Moyleman was a hard one. I remember the minus 8 degrees headwind running uphill from the Ouse to Bo Peep. Here's me skipping down to the Lewes Road and struggling up Firle Beacon.

I also did it this year in incessant rain and thick, thick mud. The two worst years! Marvellous run as you say.

Football:

Scoring two goals in the Boys' Brigade Junior Cup Final in 1983 and beating Crawley. Truth is, I was always rubbish at football though. Not a bad five a side keeper mind.

Cricket:

Taking 9-15 in a match in 1992. The only reason I didn't get 10 was because the opposition had lost a player at tea. There's a few cricket ones in there, although none with the bat..

Handball:

Ha, I was the most expensive goalkeeper in the history of the St Luke's School monthly player auction. Always quote that one with great pride :lolol:

In summary, there isn't much there. Although it's relative I guess.

Got another cricket one.......

We used to have a 'staff v pupils' match at the end of the summer term. My maths teacher, who I hated, fancied himself as a bit of a batsman but, opening the bowling I castled him second ball with a perfect yorker when I was in the 4th year.

The following year he was also our form tutor, I hated him even more and I think it was mutual. In the lead up to the annual match he was regularly giving it the biggun about how he was going to get his revenge, how I'd got lucky the year before etc etc.

Absolutely cartwheeled his off stump first ball of the match and he stomped off to long and very loud laughter from all my team mates :laugh:

That last picture reminds me of being on top of the Downs in 2010. I was on a charity walk with some friends about 5am and it was foggy. A runner emerged from the mist and when we clocked each other it was like Cathy had seen Heathcliffe on the ghostly moors. A genuine moment of frozen fear.

Silver medal for Sussex School Athletics championships for the 100 metres. I’m convinced to this day the person who beat me was an over 18 ringer.

Technically I was the second fast teenager in Sussex for a short period of time over 100m. I now make noises when I get up out of chairs

Awesome, i have been told that's a cracker. I did Race to the king and a Maverick Ultras this year. They were so hard. I personally find a road marathon mentally challenging (Not as physically challenging as an ultra) than i did the 2 trail ultras i have done. The stopping at aid stations, beautiful views and i don;t put any pressure on myself to achieve any time means i find them more enjoyable. Road marathons are brutal.

I was a spare man for a snooker team. Guy went on holiday.. I won my 2 frames and ended up winning 2 cups..

20 years later a similar thing happened, I turned up without a cue hoping there would be spare ones.. my disappointment there were none.. but I did recall passing a pool table downstairs. I borrowed a pool cue and ended up scoring a 26 break in the first frame.. won both games..

I have also done this on a snowboard.

On this topic I have also ridden the Kandaha (sp?) , Hammerkamen or whatever it’s called in Kitz and the Wengen downhill courses. All were at snail pace and more luck than judgement…I did part of the Hammer on my back headfirst.

No, he said he completed the second run before the ball went over the boundary, so 6 is correct.

"19.7.3.2 - the runs completed by the batters together with the run in progress if they had already crossed at the instant the boundary is scored."

It happened in a match in Australia a couple of weeks ago.

In Autumn 2020 in Antigua (pineapple beach hotel) I beat Jason Holder at Pool two frames to one....Much to the amusement of his team mates.

I used to live next door to former Crawley goalkeeper Scott Shearer whilst he was playing for Rotherham. Nutmegged him for a goal against my garage door with a can of beer in one hand.

I also beat Steve Beaton in Warwickshire pool league. I know he plays darts but still.

I also own a cricket bat which was once previously owned by Suresh Raina.

Dispatching the late Graham Thorpe to the boundary as a 13 year old . Next ball he rearranged my stumps for me . Now Thorpey wasn't a serious bowler I hear you say .Àt under 15 level he was rapid enough for this rabbit . Another game against Graham he didn't open v us but came in at 3 as we had Farnham 43 for 1 after 6 overs . GT hit a ton in the 14 overs left in the innings . We knew how special he was even then

Earlier this year I won a squash tournament (for my skill level) in Irvine, CA. I was amazed that I was even able to complete four matches in two days (three of them on Sunday morning). I'm 56 but often feel like I'm 156.

This reminds me of one of (if not the) first cricket matches I played when I was about 9. I was batting with another kid and we needed 5 runs off the last ball. I hit it towards the boundary but it didn't quite make it, so we just started running. The fielding team panicked and managed to keep throwing the ball everywhere apart from near the stumps. Celebrations ensued as we completed our FIFTH run.
