You mean on a Saturday afternoon at 5pm, with months of advanced notice, it cannot be organised to have a train with more than 3 or 4 carriages to get fans home? I could not do it but then again I'm sure that whoever's job it is couldn't do my job.

After years of piss poor organising, how can anyone claim to actually care enough to do something about it?

I went to the Brentford game Boxing Day 7:30pm (?) a couple of seasons ago, so I only ever miss home games under extreme circumstances.
Saturdays are fine, the trains are always 6 or 8 car and only have large queues if there's a signalling issue or other back up that's affecting other train users anyway. But what's amusing is that you have @ChickenDipper who is closing his kebab shop or whatever and insisting on half days off to support the lads when the ONLY reason the trains run on a Saturday at all is that the staff agree to overtime to provide the service. The irony that if all the local train staff went to the game we'd have no service at all doesn't seem to have hit many between the eyes.

Beyond that I'd suggest a reasonable conversation with Jack over a beer and you might better understand the constraints. He's certainly educated me about some of the issues the rail system in this area is under. Far better done in a civil manner than yelling over a message board.

Yeah I respect that, I couldn't do it, much like I doubt lots of the people who say its as simple as making sure the train isn't 3 or 4 carriages could do a fully working train plan, without knowing all the constraints. I don't want to give away too much, but those who know me on here know my job, which is in the railways, to suggest I don't give a shit when there are scenes like the Liverpool game is insulting tome slightly, its a job which can cause a lot of stress, and really affect your mental health, people absolutely give a shit.
Jack, you write passionately and I don’t doubt you. Though other colleagues perhaps don’t, all the way up to the top even.

Are the bods on the platforms Rail employees or club marshals (marshal perhaps too complementary a word in my experience though)?

Ok. My words were in frustration so without going into it any more, I don't know anyone who works in the railways apart from a Station Master in a pokey little station in Dorset, so my labeling is probably incorrect for whatever percentage who do give a shit.

However there is undeniably a lack of competence and/or motivation at some level or other. Whether it's the bottom where they're getting ferked over with all the crap going on, middle management who don't deal with what is supposed to be being done, or at the top who don't do whatever they're supposed to, to change things.

I know a few people who work for the Post Office and to be kind, they wouldn't be anywhere near their position of management (incompetence) in the 'real' world and wouldn't survive 5 mins in any half responsible level.

Unfair or not, I look at our railways as having very similar staff.

Looks like the Lewes Brighton shuttle is operating, which is the most important service IMO all that's needed now is 8 cars on the other services and we will be at full capacity

Probably more my frustrations after a long day as well, so apologies. The issue for me is bureaucracy, there is definitely a solution to all these problems, but someone (usually the DfT), has to sign it off and usually doesn't.

Coincidentally and sort of related, was asking my PO master about whether any point putting ‘fragile’ sticker on parcels with what I know about distribution centres. He said ‘pointless’ not because of automation but because workers simply don’t care and there’s a lack of care and pride by people doing their job these days. Such a malaise is to be expected I guess when eg layoffs done by text, zero hr contracts and in the PO case, faulty IT systems land honest folk in prison or worse. Still, privatisation has been a good thing hasn’t it? ;)

On a Saturday afternoon there are trains with more than 3 or 4 Carriages every 10 minutes. I accept the service isn’t very good a lot of the time, but to suggest people don’t give a shit is just plain unfair. What’s your job I’ll give it a go, but I won’t suggest you don’t give a shit.

EDIT: Do you know I wish people would stop tagging me in these threads, to give them answers about trains, I genuinely just try to help, to just be told I don’t give I shit, or I don’t care, or something like that, always descended to the same accounts knowing it all, and why it’s so simple etc. If you really want to say that you can find me after working 5 days in a week, you can tell me to my face how I don’t care, or I don’t give a shit, etc. I can take it like a big boy. You found a solution use your motorbike, use that to get to games instead of putting people down.

Just catching up and noticing the time of the post I feel sorry for the kebab you will be reviewing

The next service from Lewes is 3 (three) coaches
The one after it is 4 apparently, 7 coaches in half an hour from the East into Falmer is pisspoor.

I can understand why they can't put more trains on. I don't understand why they can't make the trains they are running longer.

Piece of piss getting home tonight, left after full time whistle, straight onto the platform and Seaford came in while walking along platform, back in Lewes by 1030, 5 minute walk back to car and home in Bexhill by 11.15

Trains should run to service the needs of the travelling public, not be regarded as a favour bestowed by the train drivers and rail unions. Like retailing and hospital work, don’t go into it if you want a 9-5, weekday job.

The issues causing there to be short forming have nothing to do with drivers, or unions but thank you for another wonderful contribution to the great train debate.

I was responding to your mate saying "…… the ONLY reason the trains run on a Saturday at all is that the staff agree to overtime to provide the service. The irony that if all the local train staff went to the game we'd have no service at all doesn't seem to have hit many between the eyes."
