Didn't like the look of the team.
Lamptey, Ayari,O'Riley had the look of , "We just need to turn up to win this one"

Weiffer should have started, do 't care who with, but we needed more bite in midfield.
Ayari was my MOTM

Second half Saints wanted it more than us and in truth I was happy to come away with a point. Our clinical finishing had an off night and we hardly tested their keeper all game. On another night we could have been 3 up in the first 20 mins.

If Saints are thinking of sacking Martin they are mad. Kudos to them for trying to play football, not so much some of the cynical fouls that wanker of a ref let them get away with constantly. The goal scorer should have been sent off long before he scored and the ref just bottled the second yellow.

Fair result and their number 33 was a blinding player on the night, waltzed through us at will.

Oh well, I went to the game feeling pretty certain that we’d blow the chance of a win, so not that stressed about it, “The Brighton Way” in all it’s glory.

Annoying as could have romped it but lucky to get a point really. Made them look good in the 2nd half. Didn't lose though so not the worst outcome.

I’m not sure what went wrong in the second half, but we made Southampton look like prime Barcelona.

They took control of CM in terms of when they beat a rubbish press they had a numbers advantage, and turned the screw further on Lamptey and Estupinan who couldn’t live with their widemen. FH failed to act, really unusual for him, until the VAR saviour.

So in the first half when rutter got the ball and everytime a southampton player was shirt pulling and yet nothing from the ref, he's a poor ref and he was poor tonight
Yeah Jones is a very poor ref.
Baulks the big decisions and gets pedantic about the small ones.

Happy to send a coach off, but bottles sending a player off.

No issue with Ayari, or O'Riley.
Just not both.
We needed a ball winner.
Second half , got so frustrated with Saints walking through multiple challenges in midfield.

Secondhalf did Stains effectively have three in CM? Ayari and O’Reilly appeared overwhelmed.

Alright. So we are second in t'league.

But that was a disgrace from my entitled perspective.

This is how I felt when I got home.

Taking Pedro off.. surely you put Julio Enciso on... like for like..

Adingra is best on the left.. Mitoma cover..

Minteh on the right.. Rutter cover..

Dunk should of come on a lot sooner.. Without Veltman we struggled.. Lamptey is great going forward but hes not a right back.. I can't bare to watch corners when Lamptey is playing.

We have to learn to be more defensive on counter attacking teams when we are 1-0 up.

We missed Baleba

Enciso is really out of favour at the moment for some reason. Has apparently asked to play for the U21s.
Maybe FH thinks Enciso is not a team player, watching him in the under 21 match , he hardly ever passes , a bit of a one man team ,
but has hardly played this season so maybe trying to impress

Puzzling lack of intensity in the second half. With the talent in our side, we should have had them chasing the ball and absolutely shagged out by 75 minutes. Then the goals would come for sure. The difference between us and the very top sides currently. We only do it for 30-45 minutes a game.

Subs didn’t work but something had to change I suppose. The trouble is, we finished with a weaker team on the pitch than the one that started. It’s normally been the other way around.

Really does seem to be a mental block against bottom 3 clubs, self doubt that affects the crowd too. As fans, we were bloody awful - me included. At most clubs, knowing a win would send them second, there’d have been such a racket that Southampton would have really felt under the cosh. We just emanated an air of resignation. That’ll change with a couple of wins in that situation but we could help…

Mentioned by me at HT, Lamptey and Estupinan‘s areas were a weak spot. Lamptey defensively was bloody awful, one on one’s so often he’s hopeless.

The other thing was a half hearted press from Rutter-Velbeck-Pedro, especially second half. It only works in packs. Once bypassed, they outnumbered us on the counter in the second half. On repeat.

So obvious to see all that in real time, even from the NS. A rare lack of action from FH in not addressing. things early second half at right back and the overloaded centre midfield.
I don’t agree with you re the first half performances Southampton. Sometimes the opposition just does some really good football stuff, and in the first half they played 2-3 brilliantly weighted and timed balls behind us, most of which we dealt with very well. And unfortunately, with the way the manager wants to play, that’s always going to be a risk.

The bigger issue was tactical. Their system allowed them to get 3 v 2 down each flank, particularly second half, and particularly when JPVH was moved out to the right, and we didn’t adapt at all. Of course, not having close to our first choice midfield caused issues too.

Their right winger being very good didn’t help, of course. There were 3 or 4 occasions second half where he waltzed past 3 or 4 players at once, including for their disallowed goal.

But let’s not pretend having Veltman out right would’ve made a huge difference last night. Lamptey showed more in the first 45 minutes going forward that JV has shown all season. And that’s with a lack of first team games and the rustiness that comes with it, and with him taking 15 touches to control the ball.

We have to learn to be more defensive on counter attacking teams when we are 1-0 up.
And play 40 minutes of defensive football (inc added time)? I don’t think so.

I wouldn’t really describe stains as a ’counter-attacking team’, certainly not last night - they pressed high and aggressively for much of the game and didn’t sit back. With Veltman out, Igor in lCB and no Baleba, we needed to be aggressive and more intense going forward and we were in the first half.

What we do need to learn is how to convert our chances when they come - 22 shots on goal with a 23% shooting accuracy and only one goal scored says it all - we should have put the game to bed in the first half.

But also have to learn not to lose our flow and concentration when teams score against the run of play - doubt can set in on one side and belief on the other very quickly when that happens - that’s enough to give the ‘lesser’ team the impetus and hunger to win, at that juncture our lack of intensity going forward and positional errors lost us the 3 points.
