Not seen either. I heard of Alien Chicks, had a listen and thought they sounded good. Slow Fiction are at Revenge which is not purpose built for bands and pus me off slightly.
It's not the best - but I saw Crows there before and that was a great gig.

Does anyone actually like mosh pits?
I prefer a good wall of death or hardcore pit.

A wall of death: you rip the venue in two and run at each other then mosh.

Hardcore pit: like a moshpit but with more arm swinging and spinning kicks. Also a good amount of two stepping when the music gets groovy. I took this at the support for Knocked Loose this year Deafhaven.

Can't wait to see Knocked Loose again next year.

Mutations Festivals started yesterday for me.

We picked up our wristbands and looked at the schedule. Floodlights were scheduled to start in five minutes, at Patterns. Never heard of them, but thought, f*** it, why not?

Patterns was surprisingly full for 4.25 in the afternoon. Floodlights are from Melbourne, and quite big in Australia, seemingly. We really enjoyed them - shades of BCNR.

Then Chalk for Alien Chicks. They were very definitely not for us - we left after two songs, thought they were awful.

So we followed @kevo’s recommendation and headed to Revenge to see Slow Fiction. They were great fun, really enjoyable. The venue, upstairs at Revenge, was also excellent.

Next up was Patterns again - Horse Jumper of Love. Dull, dull, dull.

So we left early and went back to Chalk for Lime Garden - they gave a lovely performance despite a muted crowd. We stayed on for Warmduscher - blimey, a total blitzkrieg on the senses. They were absolutely brilliant and my ears are still ringing now.

I love Brighton’s mini festivals. Looking forward to more of the same later.

Slow Fiction and Lime Gardens both decent. Snapped Ankles very good though at Patterns. Performance just built and built. They could have easily played beyond the hour.

Roll on today

Yes, I chose Warmduscher as I have seen Snapped Ankles several times. They are always brilliant, and it pained me not seeing them.

A mate messaged me to say it was one of the most enjoyable gigs he’s ever been at.

Well foolishly I didn’t listen to Kevo and ended up watching Alien Chicks. Now Kevo did warn me that I wouldn’t want to see them again but did give a solid 7/10 based on when he saw them. I’d struggle to give a 2! No Aliens and certainly no Chicks. Now I’m a fan of noise but this was just painful. Did enjoy Warmduscher but it pained me to miss Snapped Ankles. Saw a band after called Ellis D, I think that was their name. Enjoyed them very much too.

I’m not sure if Ellis D is the name of the band or the main man. Either way, he/they supported Fat Dog in Berlin, he’s also the current Fat Dog drummer and from Brighton. I thought he was great.

Remember seeing Blood Red Shoes there during one of the Great Escapes and it was pretty bad. Low ceiling, poor view and iffy sound is mostly what I remember.
I think I saw Rolo Tomassi there during one of the TGEs. I was more put off by their OTT sound check. It didn’t help that the sound was garbage after all this effort.

Did you see any of Steve Ansell's prior bands? There was a great Brighton scene at that point, largely based around The Freebutt. Charlottefield were the stand-out band for me.

Obviously a bit gutted to miss the Man City game but….a superb final day of Mutations for me. Saw a ton but 2 bands stood apart. Firstly Man/Woman/Chainsaw who blew me away. They’re come out of the London Windmill scene and are very typical of those types of bands - think BCNR, Black Midi, etc.

Secondly the headliners Kneecap, who for the 2nd time this year tore up Chalk. Total chaos. The first time I saw them in May at The Great Escape I was surprised how easily they seemed to command a 1000 capacity venue given their buzz was just building. Last night it was clear they had outgrown Chalk. Kudus to the promoters FORM for being so astute in booking them early as they are now already being booked to headline festivals next summer (Wide Awake).

Yes certainly one of the bands of the festival for me along with The Pills, Dog Race and Lime Garden

I remember thinking after I'd seen you that 7/10 was a bit of an inflated rating for Alien Chicks! Mind you, that was arguably not your worst decision of the weekend!!

If any consolation, Slow Fiction were not quite as good as other recent shows - I thought the sound was poor from where I was (vocals not loud enough), but they are a really exciting band. Seeing them twice again this week.

Like @Pogue Mahone I really enjoyed Floodlights - widescreen Aussie rock, a bit like the Triffids. Voyeur, Brooklyn post punkers, were also decent.

Good to see some love for Man/Woman/Chainsaw. Been following them for a while. Very like early era BCNR. Debut EP is excellent.

First visit to Dust on Thursday. I didn't hang around for the support acts, as Dust is an intimate venue which demands audience attention, as I have now found out. The Serfs are a trio from Ohio synth, guitar and heavy drums on a European tour. They could be doing bigger and better things than playing to a half full small venue in Brighton and I suspect the festival audience from last weekend would have appreciated their vibe and energy, I did.

Dylan McCartney one of the trio was on a similarly gruelling European tour earlier this year with one of his other bands (The Drin). It just seems like the long route to get your music out there, when there is clearly some talent.

Friday night at Concorde2 I was probably a little too sober to really get into the spirit of Goldie Lookin' Chain. The place was bouncing but I can't get out of my head a song about 70s pubes, which I will never be able to unhear. The rowdy was good if you don't mind the bawdy.

Saw the Sepultura farewell tour at the Hammersmith Apollo on Tuesday, and what a gig it was. 40 years of doing the business and they're absolute masters. Great stage presence and the entire band is unbelievably tight, what a way to say farewell.

The support was also excellent. The main support being Jinjer, the Ukrainian band with one of the best vocalists around, Tatiana is so good at what she does.

Obituary are deathmetal legends and were also excellent, I don't know them too well but enjoyed them.
