Bittersweet moment for him.

On one hand, yes, he is no longer the senior bishop and a principal leader of the Church of England, the ceremonial head of the worldwide Anglican Communion and the bishop of the Diocese of Canterbury. But on the other hand, he gets his Sundays back.

Right he goes. Will be used to further demonise wider Church communities majority of whom are good people. Sad day in that respect. Should be remembered most abuse still within families.

Inevitable. Too much pressure being put on him which was only going to get worse. If he had been a Tory MP he could have probably ridden it out.

He was fascinating on Leading, The Rest Is Politics spin-off podcast. I'm not religious in any way but he came across as just the sort of political person the CoE needed to keep that broad church together, and also (obviously) seemed to have his heart in the right place (particularly with coming out against the Rwanda policies).

Now favourite for MOTD2 if Chapman takes the Saturday role.

Welby was alleged to have considered the reputation of the church over the needs of the victims.

Respectfully, your post performs a similar function. You’ve sought to minimise the damage to the church/people of faith in pointing out that the offence occurs in greater numbers elsewhere. That’s straightforward whataboutery. I don’t keep a child abuse league table. Once is too often and I’d expect to see offenders brought to justice.

Welby’s position was plainly untenable and he had to go, which is something I feel you and I can agree on.

Had to go. Unfortunately church so often lets itself down dealing with these issues. Remember Bishop at Lewes getting away with it even though years before somebody who worked there told the Archbishop of Canterbury at time who just ignored it. Prince Charles even housed him in a property of his in West Country.

Misguided, which is something for a man of the Church! A shame, because he came across as a decent man but obviously had a flaw. To cover something like this up and lie about it is quite atrocious. He’s done the right thing, albeit very late in the day.

Er, no I haven’t and really I don’t care that much as you’re asserting. It’s nothing to do with me (or you I might add), was merely a passing comment on a football chat board that frankly no one close to this story is probably ever going to read or care about.
