I'm a financial layman but my understanding is that as prices for chocolate etc. increase it's going to be inevitable (and upsetting) that portions are going to get smaller if companies aren't going to charge more to keep the sizes the same.

Not so much a 'rip-off Britain' (unless you ask the Daily Mail) but a sign of the times in general.

Not sure why Paul Barber has not been blamed at any point in this thread. Sheesh. NSC standards are slipping.

At the cafe in my place of work they have the bare faced cheek to charge 65p for a packet of polos. 65p I tell ya!

They also charge 70p for a Snickers - and when you're lucky enough to win a free bar, as per the current promotion on the wrapper, they refuse to honour it!

Its just a sneaky way of doing it though, you don't see packets of Butter/pints of Milk/crumpets etc shrinking.

I remember when I was a kid, my Mum always bought a tin of QS at Xmas, they seemed to last forever and was always loads of toffees left at the end of the tin. Now I buy a tin and you can see the bottom of the tin before you even have one, couple of days and they are gone....and there is only about 2 green triangles as well, takes the piss!!!!!

Couldn't wait for my kids to get married, first thing I did at Xmas was to go to their place and eat all the soft sweets, leaving them with the toffees, revenge is sweet. Excuse the pun.

i for one would rather they put up the price. maybe then i wouldn't bother to buy any.

... Gordons Gin and Smirnhoff Vodka did the same reduced them from 40% proof to 37.5 ironically both are owned by Diageo a USA company is it a co incidence that most of our chocolates are now owned by USA companies and the same is happening.

doubt it, Diageo is British (old Guiness and Grand Metropolitan companies) and Nestle (Quality streets) is Swiss.

Slightly OT but on the same type of topic. Wife dug out tree decs and cards and found a tub of Jacobs Cheeselets had got put in them from last year. We checked the contents from last year and the weight is the same as those purchased this year. My one irritation on this is that you can now buy Jacob cheese footballs but they are not available after Christmas until this time next year, don't people eat during the year or have parties other than at Christmas.

The sell by date on the cheese footballs will be Nov/Dec 2013 , stock up like everyone else if you want to eat them throughout next year.

This is standard marketing practice. Manufacturer wants to increase price, so instead makes king size bar at a premium, and then drops to below original size, but at same price. Repeat until size is too small, and expensive king size becomes the standard size/price.

You are correct sir I checked the sell by dates on the ones that we have bought and it is Nov 2013. Many thanks as I didn't realize they had such a long life.

The sell by date coincides* with when they will be in the shops next year.
*Jacobs would say this a pure coincidence

Down with this sort of thing !
I don't get much of this sort of stuff, but I go to the shops a day or so before xmas, when they are trying to get rid, for a decent discount.
Or do without.

I remember as a kid/teenager going in to Woolies (London Road) near Christmas time and spending £10 on a tin of Roses or Quality Street and it lasting the whole of the Christmas period. It was the thing I looked forward to, second only to Christmas morning presents.

I am getting really sick of the shrinking products and charging the same price, its bollox, just be up front and put the price up and make smaller sizes for those on a budget, be honest about.

What makes it worse is that back in the 70s Christmas used to start on 13th December, not before. Now it starts mid-October so the buggers have got 4 times longer to sell this stuff, so making a shedload more profit.

I’m avoiding supermarkets these days.

Tend to shop small and local now.

Not out of any particular sense of community.

I just cannot stand the sensory overload of big chain stores.

They are always promoting some silly nonsense.

I want a bag of veg not a multisensory assault on my already shredded nerves.
