Thanks, this is what I was saying to my colleagues but I couldn't find anything to back this up.

Barnsley got a small payment when Man City won the Champions League in 2023. This was due to Everton being entitled to a payment of about £2.5m from Man City as part of the deal that took Stones from Everton to Man City.

Nah - he's just a flat track bully in that (not really) Champions League. Might make it on a cold Tuesday night at Stoke, but then again on the other hand, maybe ................................................... :lolol:

Seriously, he's done well. Shame we're not going to benefit very much from that - a percentage of a percentage and all that - but hell, let's all wish him well. We gave him a start, or at least helped him on his way, and nothing can change that. It could be doing wonders for our reputation as a good place for young players with ambition to sign.

In hindsight, our biggest mistake in the assessment of potential.
Really prolific goal scorers are like gold dust.
We have never had one of his quality in the Premier League

Given that we got rid of him because we thought Ferguson was a better bet (according to some) I assume this means Evan is nailed on for 4 goals on Saturday?

At Evan's age, Gyokeres was still playing in PL2. Gyokeres took years to develop to the point Ferguson has already reached.

Stupid comparison.

Gyokeres had to leave us to achieve what he is now achieving. It happens, players develop differently.

I don’t think anyone has ever claimed that was the reason we sold Gyokeres. When Viktor was sold Evan was 16 and had been here just 6 months.

I doubt our thinking of how good Ferguson may become had any bearing on the decision and given their respective ages there would have been no need to sell one to make space in the squad for other.

Actually it was Connolly who was considered the better bet at the time, not Ferguson, who is significantly younger.
Big Vic is 26. Big Ev is 20. So, yes indeed.

I have no problem with how we dealt with Gyokeres. He simply didn't show anywhere near that quality when he was with us, and didn't take his opportunities when they came to him. Other players were stepping up in front of him. Also he had two poor loan spells at Swansea and Coventry. Coventry supporters weren't fussed about him coming back to them. But Mark Robins said when he returned there was a point when it was like a switch was turned on in him, where he suddenly realised what he needed to do, and that's when things changed for him. But he would never have achieved that with us, because he wouldn't have got the game time, and he wasn't taking his chances. He needed to leave to fulfil his potential.

He missed that 1 on 1 at start but didn't affect him at all which shows level of confidence he's playing with. Class finish for 1-1 and then two well taken pens. Also good overall involvement in the game.

Have to admit I wasn't that familiar with Gyokeres about 18 months ago so I was surprised when I saw Sporting spending that money on him in summer 2023. No need to say they knew what they were doing but he probably turned out even better for them than expected.

I've watched a lot of Sporting games over last few years, first because of Trincao (always had a soft spot for him despite not making it at Barca - he was not given a fair chance like many other players tbf) and also because I've liked Amorim's coaching sytle. I've already watched few games in Amorim's short stint at Braga when Trincao (after it was announced Barca signed him for the following season) still played for them so when Ruben (just before the Covid break) moved to Sporting I've started to watch some of their games too. And more so when Trincao re-joined Amorim at Sporting in 2022.

On a side note I'm disappointed Amorim is leaving this Sporting team mid-season for current United but OTOH it's understandable he wants to prove himself in the best league in the world and if he wouldn't take the job now would probably need to wait for 18-24 more months before another top 6 PL job would become available (though Pep could leave City and Boehly can sack Maresca at any point, lol).

Sporting had other interesting players like Nuno Mendes, Pedro Porro and Ugarte who were all sold for big money already ofc. So I liked watching them and I've seen a lot of Gyokeres games there and would say even from start of last season until now he made a big step forward. He's clearly a late bloomer. Some players just need time and the right environment to unlock their talent.

And not just the talent, you also need patience, hard work and confidence in your own abilities to not give up at some point but instead in your mid-twenties go from a "nobody" to one of the best (or maybe better said the most in-form) strikers in the world in two years. That's why I think he'll prove himself on the next level too wherever he'll go.

Most people think he'll follow Amorim to United but I'm not so sure. They already have two young strikers and I think Amorim can unlock something in Hojlund (Zirkzee is a solid player too but don't see him as someone who will score tons of goals). I've seen him linked to City if Haaland goes to Madrid (because another star striker is exactly what they need but what do I know?). If I'd have to bet right now would probably say Arsenal is the most likely destination. Chelsea is always looking for strikers too but he's maybe a bit "too old" for them.

Is it possible he failed the no dickheads rule? Swedish scout on BBC says "... when he got feedback he didn't always take it well; he was headstrong. But after a couple of days he would go back to the coach and say they were right and he needed to work."

He'd be crazy to go to Man U. I don't care how good Amorim might be because of PSR it will take years to fix that mess, how are they going to move on toxic contracts like Antony? Years that their fan base won't give him. The days of "it took Fergie 4 years to win a trophy" are long gone.

He'll go to Chelsea or Arsenal I reckon.

Brighton factually.....
The only thing that rankles me is every time the media mention him its "ex Coventry player"
I guess it is probably for the best, better than "the ex Brighton player they let go for peanuts"

I think Ferguson was too young when we were making decisions on Gykores. It was more a toss up between him and Connolly tbh.

Yep, good post. He’s doing brilliantly and fair play to him.

I do find him a strange player though, everytime I watch him, I can’t work out exactly how he’s scoring so mang goals! He’s really not very aesthetically pleasing, there’s something about his technique I just don’t like. Even his first goal last night he didn’t hit properly and got a bit lucky. I totally understand why we let him go when we did as I thought the same then.

I just think he’s got an incredible mentality. Huge desire and strength. Full credit to him.
