Not really. He needed to go somewhere he could play regularly and develop as a player. It simply wasn't happening for him here. When he was sold he'd scored 3 goals in 30 Championship appearances, there was nothing to suggest we'd let this level of player go. We did well to get a million for him plus the sell on. He's done very well since he left and good luck to the lad.

That doesn't mean we made a mistake letting him go, he needed to move on to become the player he has. There was no evidence he was a player that would reach the level he has at the time we sold him (or would have reached those levels if he'd stayed), and there would still be question marks over can hit the same level in the Premier League if he was to move back to England.

I doubt the club are that worried that we let him go but are probably very glad they took the insurance policy of putting a decent sized sell on clause into the Coventry deal.
Also to add that his goal scoring in his two full Div 2 seasons at Coventry City was on a par with Adam Armstrong who has struggled upstairs. It would be interesting to see how he performs if he did come back to England.

How sure are we that we still get some £ from our sell on clause with Coventry on any future sale from Sporting?

I was telling all my colleagues (non Albion fans) that we will still be due some money and all of them said that as soon as the sale to Sporting happened, we received our £ and then any futures sales would be irrelevant. I argued the other way, and tried to find some evidence to back it up, but couldn't.

It will be a negligible amount, even in the best case scenario.

Both on loan - no one would have known at that point and clearly a couple of seasons in the championship helped his development

Can’t win them all

Makes me feel more and more sick by the week that we let him go for bugger all.

Mind you, who's to say he would have ever reached this level if he'd taken a different path and been a bench warmer with us rather than going to Cov.

Good on the lad anyway. If he wasn't already one of the hottest properties in world football, he certainly is after tonight.

Say Watford, Arsenal and Man Utd fans about 2024 Danny Welbeck.

Swings and roundabouts.

Not really the same thing bud.

Gyokeres will probably be a big, big signing for a big, big club.

Not our fault though, these things will happen with our model of signing the worlds top talents. Not going to see all of them through., Some will slip through the net.

We will get something but it won't be much in the grand scheme of things.

Pretty much every sell on clause applies to any profit being made by the selling club including payments for future sales or fees due if the player wins something etc. So we'd be entitled to a percentage of any future payments Coventry get from the clauses included in the sale of Gyokeres but what we will actually get in depends on what percentage Sporting have to pay to Coventry.

For example say we had a 20% sell on with Coventry and they have the same with Sporting. If Viktor is sold for £50m that represents a profit of about £26m to Sporting. Coventry would get around £5.2m and we'd get 20% of that so just over £1m (with a 20% sell on we'd have also received about £4.5m when Coventry sold him to Sporting)

I think Dan Ashworth let him go for £1m or whatever it was. How much is he going to spend buying him for Man U when Amorim arrives? £80mill maybe

Thanks, this is what I was saying to my colleagues but I couldn't find anything to back this up.

Can’t win them all. Shame, but understandable at the time why we let him go. He wanted to play regularly and he didn’t look brilliant in his limited first team opportunities for us. Very similar to the Peupion situation presently, didn’t look ready when he featured briefly, and we can’t put him in ahead of so many players we have ahead of him currently. Peupion might go on to be a world beater and we get that wrong too if he goes, but there’s only so many players you can accommodate.

Jury’s out whether that big club would or could be a Premier League team though.
