I would happily pay the £5 and frequently support many of the suggestions brought up on NSC, but I cannot...and will not....pay £5 a month while he is a moderator.

Well, in an attempt to respond to the repeated demand, and also to self-educate a bit, I've been looking at this. The OBR provide a nice overview here:


Labour have ruled out rises to 57% of receipts - income tax, NI and VAT. Unhelpfully, the next two biggest slices of the pie are the opaque "Other taxes" and "other receipts". I'd need a breakdown of those as I literally have no idea what makes up the combined £247bn. Presumably, there's some scope for some rises somewhere in there.

I'm surprised that corporation tax is as low as it is - less than 9% of government income. So, let's go after those fat cats for a bit more, just not the small one-man-bands, please.

Sorry, yes.

Despite some painting me as some sort of macroeconomic guru on the quiet, if you'd asked me to guess what percentage of Treasury receipts came from corporation tax, I'd have gone far, far higher than 9%.

Imho support Bozza. GB is going nowhere. We get great value out of nsc.
Bozza does the best he can with this forum. I don't doubt that at all.

I'm aware of others who feel the same about Guinness Boy.

Genuinely, I don’t mind his directness. Usually. A helpful ally when eg some people tried to shutdown debate during Potter’s reign.

There’d be far, far worse candidates for mod, who’d turn a lot of folk off.

You more than hold your own btw.

I do object to his "directness"...( I prefer to call it outright bullying due to his status as a Moderator on here.)

He is ignorant, rude, objectionable, totally biased against posters who don't follow his Labour Party worshipping and a bully who mis-uses his priviledged position as a Moderator.

I have seen nothing from him that suggests he is a suitable person to Moderate a football Forum which has grown from the backwaters to now representing the fans of a hugely respected Premier League Football Club.

I do grasp that he is probably a friend/drinking partner/whatever of Bozza, but that in itself doesn't make him suitable to Moderate a social platform in this day and age. Times have changed.

Mmmm...interesting. Was discussing the very same thing with someone close to these things during a long walk yesterday. They didn't suggest a date and would have laughed out loud if I'd suggested next Easter. But certainly within the next 2 years is not being dismissed as outlandish. Besides, it may be in certain people's interest to let him and RR get all the really shit and unpopular stuff out of the way first. Mightn't it?

Then? Well, 'who knows?' is the phrase I hear. After all, as Boris Johnson lamented in one of his rare moments of candor and reflection "...at Westminster, the herd instinct is powerful and when the herd moves, it moves." Is the herd moving yet? Probably not. But it is getting restless.

So of course, the PM isn't in imminent danger. But seemingly there is a growing feeling on the back benches that 'brand Starmer' has been badly - possibly irreparably - damaged by the WFP fiasco and freebiegate; plus he burnt a lot of political capital among colleagues with the whole Sue Gray appointment as nobody except him wanted her in the first place. (Apparently, poor old Wes Streeting is still apoplectic about being given the "we are very lucky to have Sue" line to 'get out there', only for her to be clearing her desk within 48hrs).

The big danger for Starmer is the perception around Westminster that he doesn't seem to be able to get a grip of things.

I’d suggest if a business can only afford to pay minimum wage and can’t pass on a small increase it’s probably not a great business.
That is wrong Running a small business is not easy. Many when deciding whether to try and expand and employ a youngster hold back because cost will be £20k plus. So much better for all when able to employ on low wage for initial trial period. Appreciate he could afford it but my son tried

Unfreeze fuel duty. It's been a huge subsidy for gas guzzlers mainly owned by rich people, which oil companies and fuel retailers (including the big supermarkets) have used to maximise profits. It has been encouraging more driving thereby maintaining surface transport's share of carbon emissions.

Yes - but look at some of the above posts. Fuel duty rise is being portrayed by some as a rise in taxes on working people, as it equates to VAT and other such taxes. That's the thing really - what's the trade off, which are more acceptable, which won't breach the manifesto promise?

And then when they might need someone else in the future do they give the minimum wager they hired earlier a pay rise, or hire another body on minimum wage? It’s a bad excuse IMO.

I didn't read all of them, sorry. But it wasn't one of the 4 'taxes' mentioned, so it has to be in scope and reinstating it passes one of the supposed basic rules of taxation, that you tax the bad things and subsidise the good things.
