I wasn't actually going to justify this with a response, hence my laughing reaction to your post.

I am more than sure when everyone turned up this morning there were plenty of arms round him, but I promise you, in those moments after the game a couple would have asked if he was alright, but everyone else is not in the mood to check on him. He would have walked into that changing room with 20+ faces absolutely fuming at him. Of course, I've made mistakes both on and off the pitch but I can only imagine you haven't played football if you think anyone was being kind to him in that changing room.


Mats is 24, he's not inexperienced on the pitch. He's not a Enciso, he's not a Baleba. He's a starting Dutch international. Rightly so, the press over here have picked up on it.

Regarding the public apology; a simple 'I hold my hands up, I'll make up for it' on Instagram where he is all very active would make a lot of people move on.


And your last sentence is frankly, completely unnecessary for a message board between Brighton fans. Plenty of people on this board will vouch otherwise, who know and have met me in real life including helping stranded supporters in Amsterdam and returning forgotten stuff from Marseille despite my location. I'm sure you wouldn't say this in real to me or anyone so I can only presume you had a bad Sunday morning. (y)
But why did Fabian not talk to him?. He should have have reassured him immediately not let him stew all weekend. Very poor and immature from Hurzeler who allowed the situation to become about his anger/frustration rather than the mental state of his player

People focussing far too much on the MW mistake. It’s unfortunate for him that he will symbolise the dropped points but it’s not his fault we drew from 2-0 in the 87th minute. We need to be far more resilient and controlled at the back and we’re lucky Chelsea didn’t score 6 or 7, lucky Man U didn’t score 3 or 4 and lucky Newcastle hadn’t won the game by half time.

Yes, it’s football, but early in to this season we have failed to beat Ipswich, Forest and Wolves at home (6 dropped points), and didn’t Wolves do nearly EXACTLY THE SAME thing in the league cup…like nearly exactly the same? None of this is Weiffers fault.

Admittedly, I was fuming on the way back to the car on Saturday but, the more I thought about it, the more I got annoyed about the fact that we had so many players out of position, had nobody defending properly, that JP left a limp trailing leg out to deflect it over Bart.

To me, Wolves were good for a draw. We'd been clinging on until Ferguson scored a goal that was against the run of play at the time, and as soon as they scored straight after kick off you could sense the team's nerves growing.

A point is a point, whatever the context, so hopefully we learn from it and move on

To the skeptics here about Mats: as you can see from my name, I’m biased – I’m a Feyenoord season ticket holder. It’s been fantastic to see him flourish at Feyenoord, especially in the Champions League; he’s really come a long way.

Just 2.5 years ago, he was still playing in the Dutch second division – that’s an entirely different playing field. Adjusting to the top level, both physically and mentally, takes time. And although he’s 24, he’s still relatively new at this level. The mistake last Saturday was just a minor setback; given his progress, he will keep growing and learning. He has the talent and drive to succeed, so keep faith in him!

Also, the ball recovery for the 2-1 started with him. I agree that there are many factors that can lead to errors, and allowing that much space in your own penalty area isn’t exactly ideal.

I’ve also seen some negative comments about the team’s performance: the second half wasn’t great, but I thought the first half was solid. You were well-organized, with plenty of threat, especially from the right side, and you put excellent pressure on your own half without the ball. The 2-0 was well-deserved. But yeah, a game lasts 95 minutes

Good post. It was a combination of Wieffer losing the ball, Igor backing off, and backing off, then JPVH half heartedly throwing a leg at it to deflect it pass Verbruggen.

Still, Nsc does love a scapegoat.

I can’t understand why Pervis is not coming under scrutiny on here. He was needlessly bombing forward and a simple pass left him hopelessly out of position and left Igor isolated. What was he thinking? View attachment 191287
Immediately after the game, one of my mates was asking where Pervis was for the goal. It wasn't until I saw MOTD that he was stranded up the pitch so out of position.

That was really bad on Saturday, I was annoyed as anyone at the time and clearly his head had gone after that mistake which was why he made that further error but I’ve seen enough that he’s a decent player and will turn out to be a good signing.

I’m confident that there will be a lot of posters eating their words.

Likewise, no blame attached to Hurzeler, at the elite level, you don’t expect a player to make that error that Wieffer did. Likewise, he can’t legislate for individual error’s at the corner. Our game plan was very good against a tough opposition that we knew would defend in a low block with basically two banks of defensive players.

We probably didn’t need all those players flying forward or Pervis busting a gut to get forward to though.

Unfortunately we had to many out of form / goal hungry players getting a head rush at that moment in time (Enciso, Gruda, Ferguson)

It wasn't even such a bad pass. Doyle himself said he gambled and got lucky. Poor game management all round. I'm sure they'll look at it and learn (well, that's what they always say they'll do).

That’s a fair comment. I suppose managers deal with things in different ways, some will scream, some will put an arm round and others may believe that self-reflection may be the best way to handle it.

I’m sure he has spoken to Wieffer since privately. I’d imagine Mats probably wouldn’t want to be singled out more in changing room anymore than he already was.

Who said he let him stew all weekend? That quote is taken from Hurzeler’s post match interview where he is obliged to speak to the press straight after the game.

I’ll apologise for the last sentence wasn’t necessary lol and no not a bad Sunday morning maybe I’m touchy when tired. Your right it’s a fans forum and I’m sure your a nice guy.

Managers each to their own. FH struck me as a more personal type manager maybe he does his talking to players in private. Maybe he didn’t talk about it who knows maybe he did a Fergie and threw a boot at him.

I’m sure we have all played football at a variety of levels. Players is an each to there own and depends on the environment you build in the changing room - I saw 2/3 talk to Mats before he had left the pitch. Some won’t have said a word to him I’m sure. But I get the impression it’s a tight knit team again not the one that was so disjointed towards the end of last season. I think many others could reflect what they did in those few seconds and realised they could have done a lot better.

The apology maybe we disagree on. I don’t think footballers need to be on social media saying sorry for every misplaced pass that leads to a goal. Sa goal kick leading to our opener was a terrible mistake and we score 7 seconds later.
If he had headbutted a player been sent off for violent conduct and it cost us then I’d say he’s let fans and team mates down and maybe he should say something but in this instance I don’t.

As for Mats I don’t know that much about him before he signed. I read plenty of complimentary articles of him being a very good single pivot CM.
As of yet it’s hard to judge him. I thought he was decent v Everton bar a couple of shaky moments.
He got injured. He’s behind balaba and Ayari at the moment and o’Reilly and Milner will also be back soon. He won’t get easy minutes and he has to show more for sure. But it is still a new league new players maybe a new formation for him in a new country. 24 and an international or not he still needs time to adjust. Balaba has come in leaps and bounds this season but he’s been given time.
Some of the best CM in the world have come to the PL and taken months to get up to speed or in some cases they never do. But he still needs time.
I hope he comes good

I’ve just put myself through the torment of watching the highlights again. It’s really harsh to blame any of the players defending the Wolves counter. Igor, in particular, does really well to slow them down whilst he’s waiting for support.

Unfortunately, the blame is squarely at Weiffer’s feet. It’s schoolboy stuff, and even then I’m not sure I’d have mucked that up so badly as a schoolboy.

Although admittedly the 3 players up alongside him should’ve managed the situation more with maybe one or two staying back… but I don’t think a Premier League player can legislate for Weiffer playing that as poorly as he did, so they probably thought they were guaranteed to put the game to bed.
What about Estupinan rushing to join the 4 on 1? They scored from the position he vacated because clearly he thought 4 on 1 wasn’t enough of an overload, and thought it better to bomb into their half than hold station. So I think you’re wrong, players could legislate for a long punt upfield whether Wieffer’s pass, a shot saved etc.
