Glad to have "pushed" it back into your consciousness!
I like The Cure but wouldn’t say they are my favourites by any stretch. ......
However, back in Spring ‘81, they played the Top Rank. I was a callow sixteen year old and waited outside during the afternoon. When they arrived, they all signed my copy of ‘A Forest’ (still got it) and I asked Big Bob to put me on the guest list as I hadn’t got a ticket. And he did.
Always admired them for that and for the fact that they have done some amazing songs. Some that don’t float my boat too, ‘Friday I’m in love’ being the most obvious one. I cringe when I hear that.

The Cure kind of passed me by in my youth and although I've had a vague appreciation of their music since, I had never quite grasped HOW good they are until I noticed this thread and started properly listening to them.
It has become something of a post-work listen in the last few weeks and, in a very tough period in my job, something I look forward to that helps me unwind instead of a commute.
Here I sit, cold beer in hand with Lullaby currently playing and a big grin as I wait for the game.
Cheers to all of you Cure fans for the inspiration
and here's to 3 points for the good guys too!

Having posted this, it occurred to me that the only albums I have ever owned were all compilations. Boys don't cry, Staring at the sea, Mixed Up.

One thing that's objectively true is that Alexis Petedris will never be caught picking the obvious answer, no matter how correct it is. He put Blue Monday at No 4 in the list of New Order songs. He reminds me of Lee & Herring's 'Ironic Review' parody of Julie Birchall and Tony Parsons, forever concerned more with what they want people to think they think, than with what they actually think. It always leads him to make the muso hack's easiest mistake of punishing the popular for being popular in an attempt to seem to know more than the herd. It's not that low in the list of greatest pop singles ever made, let alone in the Cure's catalogue.

I often think that of lists of the greatest movies
.I must be more broad minded than some people composing these lists. Going by the heart.
I have read quite a few of these particular Guardian lists and in almost all cases the justification for their top spot is given; this Cure list is no different. The difficulty with bands like The Cure is they have vast back catalogues spanning many decades and crucially many different styles. People have different preferences, like different eras which in turn throughs up different favourite songs….I wrote similar in the Paul Di’Anno RIP thread two days ago regarding Iron Maiden. I don’t think AP is trying to be too cool for school at all. He even explains the folly of the very idea of The Cure’s best song. As it happens he chose my favorite song. At the end of the day lists like this are just opinions…but I like the fact AP explains his.

I don't take such things as seriously as you, but am with you about Just Like Heaven. Another here here. Same with Books and top 10’s, 50’s, 100’s etc. Anything remotely popular is often missing. Meanwhile “Discovering 15th Century Franciscan Abbey Candles” or the like makes the top 3…?!

He's done it too many times for it not to be deliberate. If asked to list Lee Marvin's top 20 songs, he'd find a way to have 'Wandrin' Star' at number 5.
I’m not saying it’s not deliberate. What Im saying it is his opinion…which he has explained. As I happens I agree with The Forest, it’s without doubt my favourite song of theirs. I’m sure if you asked a hundred different Cure fans you’d get a variety of choices….some might not be the “obvious” choice; again see the RIP thread regarding Iron Maiden’s Seventh Son album.

Any top20 The Cure songs by a fan could realistically be drawing for a hundred or so tracks (and hopefully more to add next week).
I'd definitely have 'Dressing Up', 'Shake Dog Shake' and 'Like Cockatoos' in there though.
And anyone who disagrees needs to stop getting The Cure wrong.
