Human nature in'it?
I give a little to those worse off than me, but only where they aren't able to better themselves due to e.g. being disabled by unavoidable circumstances. I give to some charities and I'm a volunteer guide dog fosterer. But I wouldn't give money to a beggar without understanding how they got into their predicament.
I don't expect the rich to give to the poor, but it's nice when they do (I'm not rich BTW).

The only expectation I have on the rich is that they pay the tax that they are supposed to, irrespective of the amount. There was a report this morning that the richest 60 people in this country paid something like £3bn in income tax last year. If that is the correct amount that they should have paid then all's good.

There is some concern tax rises in the Budget could prompt an exit of the super-rich, hurting UK finances.

It wasn’t that long ago that we worked out who the ‘essential’ workers in our society were.
Hedge fund managers and investment bankers would quickly see their castles in the clouds tumble without the work of those poorer propping them up.

To most people rich means someone who has more than they do. Hence the regular mantra of ‘tax the rich’ which's actually means ‘don’t tax me, just who anyone earns more than me’.

I think that’s a very fair point. Tax mitigation means minimising one’s tax within the rules. If that enables the super rich to pay less tax than the HMRC would like, then change the rules. Tax avoidance, however, is illegal and the rules should be enforced.

Time for a wealth tax.
Nobody should be worth 8 figures or more and be subjected to more or less the same taxes as the rest of us.
Leave high earners alone though (£100k-£200kers), as they provide crucial skills in society and the economy and they already pay enough tax.

) but why? They pay far more tax than us assuming they pay what they should. What’s the problem apart from envy?
