Actually, most people DON'T know the words. As I've mentioned before, the VAST majority sing "Good old Sussex by the sea" instead of "Oh Sussex, Sussex by the sea".

There are also a few "Going up to win the cup" types, too...
I honestly don’t remember anyone on the terraces singing anything different to “Going up to win the cup” before we played at the Amex

Seems to be a premier league effect. Got a lot of time for Ipswich and their fans, pre-frame all the ones I spoke to were great. But had the same experience as others after.

Seems to be a much higher percentage of dickheads after they get into the premier league. Not saying they don’t exist in lower tiers but they certainly show themselves more in the prem.
Now that they have achieved something , they feel the need to prove "something"

I think it has aged very well. It will be played at my funeral.

I think it's very easy to sing the word 'gay' and understand that you are calling on folk to be happy of heart and not commanding them to take it up to the elbow. It's also easy not be embarrassed by the word 'gay' in the modern world. It's a sign of maturity.
More innocent times ironically !

I think you are right. Although I do much prefer the actual words of the anthem rather than the adulterated version. To upset the woke warriors, I'd be happy for 'boys/men' to be replaced with a more unisex term. After all, women do make up 50% of Sussex and even if it's a war song they're in the forces too these days- 'We're the folk from Sussex'. Not sure William Ward-Higgs would have approved mind.

Think anyone is entitled to be confused when (not so long ago) we sang GOSBS followed by “You’re to ugly to be gay”.
Not confusing - a lot of football fans are miserable ugly bastards. Though I think the ugliness is only part of their misery.

I guess it would help placate the thousands of women protesting and demonstrating against this sickening misogyny every week at the Amex. Great idea

I’m not sure ploughing, sowing, reaping and mowing are warlike occupations.

The dull part of the south coast
Chatting to a few on way out. Happy with point - yeh we only ourselves to blame as didn’t score etc - all fine.

Talked about the banner incident and they said yeh it was weird…

30 something year old Ips fan pipes up ‘I tell you what was weird - that song you sang at the start’

Me, confused ‘what you on about?’

Him ‘that song about ALL being gay and that proper weird’ (dead strait annoyed him).

When I laughed at him and explained it was a world war 1 song of our county and others laughed at him the response was:

‘Why sing a war song that was ages ago’.

Me - ‘it’s one of the best songs in football as it means some thing to our county - maybe educate yourself’

I think I met the most dense away fan yet this season no? And homophobic of course?
Tractor shagger.

Now is the time for marching, Now let your hearts be cheery
Hark to the merry bugles Sounding along our way.
So let your voices ring, my folk, And take the time from me,
And I’ll sing you a song as we march along,
Of Sussex by the Sea!

Chorus
For We're the folk from Sussex, Sussex by the Sea.
We plough and sow and reap and mow,
And useful folk are we;
And when you go to Sussex, Whoever you may be,
You may tell them all that we stand or fall
For Sussex by the Sea!

It now reads like a Hobbit anthem about the Shire in Middle Earth, but guess I could get used to it and we are not the tallest team in the PL

Are we sure it wasn’t the reference to ploughing, sowing and reaping that upset the Tractor Boys - perhaps they thought we were gaily celebrating their relegation back in 2002?

Tiny adaptions, Zeb.

'Let your voices ring my boys' becomes 'with voices all in one accord, take the time from me'
You could do any number of small adaptions that strengthen the original and uphold its theme and Edwardian style.

After all, Ward-Higgs was a Londoner anyway and missed some things. 'We wunt be druv' could easily be shoe-horned into the original.

'for we wunt be druv, as we sound our love, for Sussex-by-the sea'

I'm quite happy with the original though, but I've changed my mind on new adaptions, as long as they are better and don't take anything away from the song's era, pride and resonance. Being a lover of Wesleyan style anthems, and a Sussex man of great loyalty, I reckon I could smash Ward-Higgs out the ground on this- unlike Sussex yesterday :ROFLMAO:

Sure I heard a regimental band do it with, "you may tell them all, that they've done f*** all, in Sussex by the sea"

:ROFLMAO: 'You should tell them all how the fires burn tall, in Croydon in Sur-rey...'

Modern twist ?

So let your voices ring my boys, and take the time from me
And I'll sing you a song as we march along of LGBQT
Known as the 'Millwall at home' version.

I'd rather be gay, if that's OK

(I rather like the way it upsets the sort of bloke who would never give another man a firm handshake let alone a hug).
