He won’t be singing the National Anthem this evening, because, although born in Brum he represented Ireland as an international player. The usual suspects are pearl clutching and calling for his sacking.

I can’t say I’m remotely bothered about this, I was born in Sussex, and never represented any country at international level, I wouldn’t sing it either.

I don't suppose Fabio or Sven sang the England national anthem either but I may be wrong.

You obviously are bothered about it, enough to start a thread about it.

I’m not at all bothered about whether he sings it or not.

I do find the ‘outrage’ of various news media platforms pandering to the plastic patriots rather tiresome. I started the tread as it is relevant to football, and this is , ostensibly a football board, with a variety of opinions represented, and was interested what other participants thought.

You have to remember that before the euros final the right wing crowd were buzzing because our players sung their hearts out showing passion whereas none of the Spanish players sang a word. This meant we were nailed on to win.

Granted the Spanish anthem has no words but that is a small detail and singing makes you better at football. Fact.

Always amusing to see the Dutch line up against the Spanish, with the Dutch declaring loyalty to the King Of Spain while the Spanish stand there in silence.

There must be Dutch people who object to their anthem too.

It's the most tenuous of arguments that pashun and singing will improve a players performance or mean that they are going to play for the cause harder than someone who doesn't. It's also tedious telly watching players sing/ mime like a primary school kid and mascots waving at the camera while 2 crap songs - Italy are excused - play in the background.

It's the UK national anthem in any case. It shouldn't be used for England.

I wouldn’t sing it as our anthem is a sycophantic ode to a single person and an imperialist past, not representative of what I feel my nationality is.

As a foreigner, the illogical idea behind it is what stands out the most.

The song is about saving the God or Queen... yet it is the only (?) song title that sometimes changes when the subject of dies.

It appears entirely unrelated to England and get the impression that you're on a journey abroad and need to convince the primitivite inhabitants that there's some sort of relation between your King and whatever could be considered God.

It also struggles under a modern day fact check. If we look at the actual end results, they look dire. None of these Queens or Kings went on to have eternal life. Sure, the current one appears to be immortal (we have no evidence of the opposite) but this is probably subject to change within 0-20 years.

UK might have the richest music history of any country on earth. Surely there must be one or two songs describing the hills of Scotland or height of busses or your local pub culture or something a little bit more England?

Freedom of speech (singing) innit. That confuses them.
