Good to see Fabian point out to journalists how you can’t compare a dead ball situation after a whistle and a ball a player was trying to keep in for a throw in which is a dynamic situation. He did it in a lovely condescending way to add to the slap down. Fully expecting motd to say Rice should not have gone off. He has picked up the baton from Kane as being able to do nothing wrong with some in the media.

Mike Dean also explained on soccer Saturday.

Rice knew exactly what he was doing. He was looking right at Veltman & where the ball was, casually walking in front of the free kick & nudging the ball away. He may not have booted the ball away in an obvious way, but he was very much delaying the free kick in a way he thought would go unnoticed & look like he wasn’t. 99% of the time it goes unpunished. But today it did. Couple that with his dive to the floor trying to con the ref into carding Velts, and overall I have no sympathy.

Except Joao Pedro. Today. In the same game.
Which law did he break?

In Black & white?

FWLIW there were far too many marginal greys the whole game, I thought the ref played it well, it was a shithouse game in many respects . . . It may have been better for us, it could have been a whole lot worse.

Silly old bat
Except Joao Pedro. Today. In the same game.
Pedro kicked the ball which was over the sideline so dead. Due to multi ball, another ball on a cone was available nearby so it didn’t delay anything.

As an Albion supporter it increased our chances of getting something from game so pleased Rice went of. But sorry can hardley call that an attempt to delay a freekick.

No Morality Morgan …. under his stewardship his rag hacked the phones of crime victims during live police investigations. Grime.
Grime? Far too polite

100% yellow for Rice. Might be "housery" or whatever but catching a player trying to stand over the ball or make him block a quick free kick to get him booked is not a new trick and it's always been a yellow for the opponent.

However I reckon Veltman could have pulled out of the kick, at least a little, once Rice knocked the ball away.

Although you couldn't find a player in football who I have less sympathy for!
It's impossible to know, but I think what Veltman was thinking . . . Hit him with the ball . . . . . In a get out the way you twat, hopefully this stings. How would he know Rice was going to flick the ball away? So there's an argument Rice endangered another player. . . A potential red.

Rice should count himself lucky he didn't get injured.

Anyway, game over, we learn from this and move on

JV- MoM.

I don’t see an option for 10 point deduction for Everton and Leeds so I guess I can’t vote.

Just wanted to check something for clarity as I haven't seen it discussed.
Is kicking the ball away an automatic yellow in the laws of the game? A lot of people saying that Pedro does this in the first half and escaped punishment. I know refs have been told to be strict but I am not sure if it is explicitedly stipulated in the rules?

In the rules it does say "... an opponent who deliberately prevents a free kick being taken quickly must be cautioned for delaying the restart of play." I get the consistency argument and I think Pedro should have been booked. I just wonder if the two offences are the same according to the rules and therefore should be punished in the same way. Either way Rice was already on a yellow so silly to stop the free kick being taken and kick the ball away.

What?

Of course it was an attempt to delay a free kick. How can deliberately moving the ball away from the opposition player, trying to take the free kick, be anything OTHER than attempting to delay a free kick?

lets be honest - the foul on veltman that resulted in the free kick should have been a yellow anyway
Not even sure it was a foul - more like Veltman buying a foul as he is so good at.
Can anyone confirm whether Saka was onside for their goal? Haven't seen a replay which confirms either way but he does look suspiciously off. I saw on X that Naylor said it wasn't checked but I'm assuming it was.
Yes - well onside when it was kicked; it was so long before it came down again they'd all moved quite a lot.
Except Joao Pedro. Today. In the same game.
Incomparable. It wasn't a free-kick for a start.

There is nothing in the laws about 'delaying' a throw-in. There is a specific offence about deliberately preventing a quick free-kick. The two things are hugely different.

From 2022 every bit of dissent, kicking the ball away, asking for cards to be given were meant to be yellow cards.

In reality, largely abandoned.

Slick cheats such as Arsenal and Manure would be ridden with cards/dismissals if that had been seen through eg the constant asking for cards,

I get that. I meant are they written in the laws of the game? There is something general about delaying the restart, which my understanding is what kicking the ball away could be interpreted to be. However, there is an explicit rule about delaying a quick free kick.

They both absolutely knew what they were doing. All part of the modern gamesmanship. Ricn tried to slow the game down and stop the play by kicking the ball away, Veltz tried to boot the ball against Rice, not knowing that Rice would be stupid enough to kick it away. Yes it was a yellow card per the rules and they have been stamping down ontime wasting for a couple of seasons now, is there a higher criteria for a 'second yellow' ? No.

Vetlz v HaHa last season was a battle of epic proportions.

Best £900 grand Tony ever spent.
Agreed. Mutual shithousing ends in a decision. I honestly think, as odd as it sounds, if rice stands up there instead of bringing attention to it, the ref may not have felt he has to make some sort of instant panicky decision.
