Not a good angle, can't really see him kick the ball away
People are calling it a kick, its really more of a stupid flick of the outside of his foot at the ball, still a kick, but a stupid thing to do and the letter of the law has been applied.

In my humble opinion, its the inconsistency and lack of clarity here. If the ref were miked up so we could hear what decision he was applying, and it was applied consistently end to end and each week in and out, I think there would be less contention....

Some of the refeering is dire and VAR doesn't pick it up, some of the refereeing is spot on, and no one knows which rule he's applied so we all guess...Just my view...

Watched the highlights and the Ref appears to be apologising after he sent him off, along the lines that’s the new rules there is nothing I can do about
I also wondered if it wasn't until he showed the yellow, he realised it was Rice's second? Couldn't take it back then - and had no option but to get the red out.

The issue is the lack of consistency. We’d have been furious if it was given the other way.

Do I think Veltman did anything wrong? No, not in the slightest.

Did Rice do something that deserved a yellow? Barely. If that’s a yellow, we may as well all pack up our bags now.
I think that's the issue the consistency

It's a second yellow for sure, but next week it won't be.

He barely moved the ball. And stuff like that happens minimum 3-4 times a game. He could’ve legitimately argued he just tried to knock it backwards to Veltman.

Anyway, it’s a difference of opinion. I get why the decision was made, but I don’t agree with it, and it leaves far too much to interpretation. And it could lead to a lot of games being turned by innocuous things like this.
It was a deliberate intervention to stop play, or cheating, punishable by a yellow card.

Our players have done it and got punished, it's stupid.

Just seen it properly. If that had happened to us we’d be absolutely fuming. Velts has tried to take a free kick from a moving ball so how can someone be penalised from blocking an illegal restart?

It's been absolutely joyous fielding all the comments from salty Arsenal mates this afternoon. So many conspiracy theories flying around about the Refs and Arsenal 😂 The Maupay crying gif has been working overtime winding them up.

The fact that Veltman got MotM is even funnier. It's really set me up nicely for my last night shift. 😁

Seems to be a spoof sadly. McCoist awarded MotM to Joao Pedro. Still funny as f*** photo tho :lolol:

But who was he kicking the ball to? I really don't think Veltman was actually taking the free-kick and passing it to a teammate. He knew exactly what he was doing.
it’s irrelevant regarding the booking.

Rice thought he was being clever by just flicking the ball away to delay the FK, 100% second yellow. Veltman was going to try to kick the ball against Rice to accuse him of failing to retreat which would have been harsh but Rice was the architect of his own downfall. Veltman was clever and did nothing wrong
I don't think he was trying to kick it at Rice. He was looking downfield and aiming to kick it long to Welbeck/Pedro. Rice was to the side and not in line with the ball.

Even funnier that VAR couldn’t get involved. Arteta the silly hand shaker blanked him as well.

You don’t know this as he wasn’t able to take the free kick

Rice should be de-selected from the England squad for 2 games to teach him a lesson.
