The tweet reminds me of that embarassing video of some Everton fans abusing their own team at the train station. Football at the top level is viewed by too many as being completely separate from real life. I'd guess that both the tweeter and the chanters wouldn't be so callous or aggressive in their day to day life, but James O'Brien's metaphor of tying up the scarf so tight that it cuts off the oxygen to your brain seems to apply. To those Everton fans Maupay and co. are not people with real human emotions, they are characters in a drama. The Crawley fan seemed to view O'Riley not as a fellow athlete, but as a pawn in a huge financial game, to be dismissed because he happens to work for an opponent. Dehumanisation is increasingly problematic in a world where all can communicate with and about people who they are never likely to have to be accountable to.

When a public disaster happened back in the seventies and eighties, we were probably all guilty of exchanging the sick jokes in the playground or the pub. In some ways, it's part of the coping process. It's not surprising that this kind of black humour is rife with the emergency services who have to find ways to cope. However, too many people seem to view the public forum of social media as just a huge playground or pub. In making that mistake, they've only themselves to blame for not realising that everyone in the world can hear, somebody is inevitably going to tell teacher and they're going to have to face the consequences.

I remember calls to never play Crawley again after the thuggery in the 'friendly' at the start of Hyypia's brief era.

The thuggery seems institutional at Crawley. I think they have a massive problem with our success for some reason, whereas we didn't care about them.
Is in the whole mindset of its residents where they have a chip on their shoulder for not living in London or Brighton.

Remember playing a county cup quarter final (secondary school) at Oriel in maidenbower in the late 2000s - whole year group on sideline hurling abuse at us the away team - no actual interest in supporting their own.

As i said earlier, an unpleasant place with unpleasant people

They don't have any actual fans do they? Pretty sure they're all 'big six fans' (but go to their games because it's down the road, have never seen the club they 'support' play though) or Palace.

All bankrolled by a bunch of Yank virgins looking to make a quick buck.
Pretty much this. I worked in the area for 25 years and Crawley Town were mostly everyones second team. Geographically in Sussex but in reality, a colony of South London. Mostly Chelsea and Palace plus some Arsenal + Spurs with a scattering of Albion was my observation.

Think it's a bit harsh to go after a kid who put something silly on social media.

We don't know how seriously O'Riley is injured and I would imagine most on here have cheered a crunching challenge from one of our old war horses back in the day, especially if it was against premier league fancy Dan's.

It really isn't. It's just the same as anywhere else.

It was a football match that had a bad tackle by someone from Northampton.

I hope Crawley town crawl back in they hole they came from. Discussing thugs
I think that's the protest thread. Out of here, a few lines south.

To clarify, I wouldn't be expecting the woman in question to be tarred and feathered before being fed to the starlings off the West Pier.

As she's working in football, a charge of 'bringing the game into disrepute' wouldn't be unreasonable IMHO.

Hopefully it would have as much of a deterrent effect within the game as anything else.

Not really - when Calderon broke that blokes leg in the League cup I don’t remember anyone celebrating it

Imagine living in Crawley 😂
Well, according to Zoopla...

Why Crawley is a good place to live

"Nestled between the city vibrancy of London and seafront tranquillity of Brighton, Crawley offers the best of both worlds. Residents appreciate the town's lush green spaces, with pockets of nature such as Tilgate Park providing peaceful retreats. As the 4th best place to live in the UK according to a recent study, Crawley doesn't disappoint with its quality of life. Its location near Gatwick Airport is advantageous, not just for holiday-makers, but also for those moving to Crawley looking for good transportation links. High scores in job availability also make living in Crawley appealing, indicative of a strong, stable local economy."

.....it's the 4th best place to live in the UK

Eh. As someone who more or less grew up with social media, for young adults there's no excuse not to know you can and will be held accountable for what you post online. It was a bitter, mean-spirited tweet and she should at least apologize.
I agree. I actually wouldn't want her to lose her job, but she should at the very least apologise and admit she was out of order. I wonder how she would feel if she was challenged in a game in a similar way and had received a serious injury? Just a bizarre thing for a fellow footballer (and coach!) to post.

Oh do f*** off.
I was born and raised in Crawley, I have raised a family in Crawley, my best friends I grew up with here, my parents live here. I know lots of Crawley fans, and they are all decent people.
Not so very long ago, we had Charlie Oatway, who was celebrated for his aggression on the pitch, I remember most Brighton fans liked him and most found it a bit amusing that he bit a Darlington players face, and we have had others.
Would we have given 2 shits about injuring a PL player in a cup tie when we were L1?

Bad tackles are part of football. Calderon against Newport has already been mentioned. Since we became a Premier League club, Knockaert (twice) and Andone have both lost control of their tempers and set out to hurt opposition players.

The idea of Brighton suing Crawley or Williams is hilarious. As is that the Albion are now some holier-than-thou football club who shouldn't be sullying themselves with the likes of Crawley

Calderon against Newport

I don't recall Calderon gloating about the damage he'd caused, like Williams did. I don't recall our fans celebrating the injury to an opponent like Crawley's fans have been doing all night and all day. And I certainly don't recall any of our coaches or anyone else with a position at the club celebrating the injury on social media.

But yeah, apart from those things it's exactly the same.
