Don’t know if this has been posted on here before but it’s doing the rounds on social media and it’s fascinating viewing of a time before their Brighton/Palace affiliations
They were both Palace at one stage in their careers, or twice in the case of AllisonCouldn’t lick Alf Ramsey’s boots
Top man Mullers.
Palace people always whinging
Absolute legend Mullery
True. But Mullers is Abion through and through (mostly)They were both Palace at one stage in their careers, or twice in the case of Allison
Here's Mullery in 1974 talking about the vacant manager's position at Spurs. Two years later he'd go on take up his first own managerial job... with us...
No, they actually went with one of Mullery's recommendations in that interview, Terry Neill. Burkinshaw followed two years later in 76.Fascinating.
In the end they went for Keith Burkinshaw.
And were relegated.
But they stuck with him and were promoted (in that infamous stitch up last game)
And then went on to win in Europe and domestically
Oh ok nice one.No, they actually went with one of Mullery's recommendations in that interview, Terry Neill. Burkinshaw followed two years later in 76.
He was pretty much. He played for them from 1960 to 1970, Then Arsenal recruited him as their manager in 1976 from his Tottenham jobOh ok nice one.
I always remembered Terry Neill as Arsenal through and through.
Judging by these two photos Mullers seemed to be getting far more "love action" playing for England than Allison was getting with Fiona Richmond in the bath...Who wins? Mullers, 31 England caps, or Allison and Fiona Richmond in the bath?
P.S. Only people of a certain age will remember Ms. Richmond, she of Pyjama Tops fame and naughty mags.
Martin Hinshelwood tells a great story, they were all in the bath at Stamford Bridge having knocked Chelsea out of the cup Big Mal comes in with Fiona and Monte Fresco the Fleet Street snapper, Fiona gets in the tub and almost all of the squad get out once Monte’s camera comes out ! ( In fear of wives and girlfriends)Who wins? Mullers, 31 England caps, or Allison and Fiona Richmond in the bath?

Actually I don't think it's bizarre at all. He was a top-rated coach. Looking at it from our modern perspective he would have been ideal, but obviously the thinking at the time was that in order to be a successful England manager you should have been a successful club manager first. (We now know of course that the two jobs are radically different). There's an almost bizarre school of thought, that the FA should have ignored Revie in 1974 and gone for Big Mal.
Take out the equation of transfers fees, contracts etc, and just have got him on the training pitch with the best 22 players in the country, there was according to many extremely learned football people, no better English coach in the domestic game.
El Tel said he was years ahead of his time, as did Bobby Moore, but maybe not Mullers.
