I just completed this as part of a test, It gave me a real headache and no I did not get 100%, let's see how good NSC is:

Living in Greece was the best thing that had ever happened to him. He often wondered what would have become of him if he hadn't made that decision to leave Hull and his boring tax job. A lot of water had passed under the bridge since then. Discovering talents within himself, meeting his wife and establishing a whole new career were just some of the things he knew he wouldn't have now if he had stayed in Hull. Smiling he poured himself an ouzo.

So can you identify the following:

Gerunds (4 of them)

Present participles (2)

Past participles (5)

Modal verbs (2)

Auxiliary verbs (5)

'to' infinitive (1)

Bare infinitive (1)

Intransitive verbs (7)

Transitive verbs (5)

Good luck

I have a decent mark in an English A-level equivalent and I've never heard of a "gerund".

Actually I found that one the easiest as you just need to look for the words ending in 'ing'. I struggled with the auxiliary verbs the most.

A gerund is a nerb. Or a voun. As opposed to a participle -- and present participles also end in -ing -- which is a verbjective.
