Good article in the Daily Mail (no, honestly)

Interestingly last night on Sky News, the lovely (if somewhat wide jawed) Anna Botting had just finished the Keys/Gray story when she commented on a picture of an 'upright gorilla that walks like a man'
"that's the next stage for men isn't it!? Ha ha, chortle chortle - oops actually I guess I shouldn't really say that given recent events!"

Doesn't bother me in the slightest, but wouldn't be suprised if someone gets offended by the potential double standards!

Really? I did not see that on Sky News. Even if someone does get offended by the double standards there is NO WAY she will be sacked.

Why is loose women still on tv? Surely that's next to go, sexist munters. :jester:

Yes, quite so. Whilst I'm not great fan of Keys or Gray I do now feel this is a ridiculous overreaction and I now hope that sexist comments from women will be treated in the same way. I think that watching the Test Card is better than Loose Women, it rivals Jeremy Kyle for bing the biggest load of tripe on television.

I wouldn't put yourself down by mentioning your article in the same post as the Daily Mail one. The Daily Mail article is bile-filled nonsense, as is common with that paper. For one it is full of ridiculous hyperbole, and he then (for me) completely misses the difference between sexism and stereotyping.

What Keys and Gray did was wrong because they believed, purely because she was a woman, she was not up to the job. That was sexist.

Saying "men aren't good at cleaning", "women aren't good at football", etc is generalising and stereotyping, but is on the whole not offensive. Although that Mail article certainly makes a good stab at it!

Would there be the same uproar if, for example, the Loose Women ladies remarked about a male cleaner in the studio : 'someone should teach him how to use the vacuum cleaner'?

What's more to the point is that whilst most wouldn't call it funny Keys and Gray were joking.

Yes. Why, has that been used on the show? Giles Coren certainly hasn't managed to come up with any quotes from women that demean the ability of a man based upon his sex. I assumed, being a professional journalist with time to research these things, if such a quote existed he would have found and trumpeted it.

Giles Coren? Really? Bit of a reputation as a "professional journalist" and it's not a good one.

Personally it doesn't bother me at all, but I have often wondered about the double standards on sexism.

Picture the scenario......

TV Ad: A group of city traders are in their office when one of them reminds the others it is 11:30. At this point they all run off to the refreshments area to ogle at a nubile young female getting her kit off whilst they all enjoy a can of diet coke

No? Thought not.

Sometimes there is a timing/climate issue as well.

If there had been a sexism thread on here a week ago and someone had said 'go and put the kettle on, love' as a joke, you might have got away with it. This week it's open season, and you'd probably face a firing squad.

Very good. You could pitch that to Pear Tree Productions.

A line of coke maybe.

Can't say I'm familiar with his work. I was using the term tongue-in-cheek to be honest. I expect that almost all Daily Mail opinion pieces get written without so much as a fact check. Wouldn't want the truth to get in the way of a good article, would they?

Have you seen either of the Transformer films? It's ridiculous to suggest that the objectification of women doesn't take place.
