Whoever designed the A23 / A27 interchange wasn't very forward thinking. It was almost unfit for purpose the day after it opened never mind growth in traffic in 30 years since.

Also, the top of Mill Road is a nightmare for returning buses and supporters using the P&R. It can take 45mins to exit because traffic coming off the A27 onto the roundabout about is doing so at speed, and frequently. Which we must give right to obviously. Stick a set of light on so 15-20 vehicles from the P&R can exit at any one time!

Again, some proper policing or lights re-set for the hour or so either side of match would kill this problem just as it would on Village Way. But nobody cares or is interested. We just have too put up with therefore, but it's all utterly solvable if someone gave a ****

It's well beyond time to take a chunk out of the SDNP and tarmac it to ease the pressures and not just on match days. The sanctimony of protecting this green space without challenge is ridiculous and I just don't buy any of the 'well, it's the thin end of the wedge if you do that' arguments. Reminds me of the NIMBY ones against the stadium e.g. "the ducks, the ducks, but what about the DUCKS....?" Well, feck 'em, the Seagulls were more important. Next stupid question?!
Agree withthat, but not your final paragraph.

If the right steps were taken (including your suggestions above) then tarmacing over the South Downs wouldn't be required.

32,310 v West Ham United 18.2.33
32,036 v Reading 27.3.70
31,828 v Aston Villa 22.8.59

These were every occasion in the whole history of the Goldstone, that we had attendances bigger than the average Amex attendance (Goldstone average : 10,533)
I was at the first 4 on the list and the Aston Villa game definitely. Plus probably others on the list that were not as memorable.

I think the shuttlebus into town idea is a good one. One of the problem will be that it needs to always contend with traffic congestion after a match, especially roundabouts by the Amex. Even if buses pick up on the A27 they still problems on return Maybe if supporters could get down to the Keep, the buses could use the traffic lights there to pick up and return?

Is there a limit on the number of carriages due to the platform length at Falmer? Either way, more regular or longer trains would help. Regarding buses back to Mill Lane. I know double deckers won't fit under the bridge and they no longer use the bendy buses. Plus the other problem is buses get stuck in the single lane with the fans cars going up the hill and therefore take longer to get back. The best solution to this would be to have an additional park and ride location. Maybe a few miles north up the A23 near to Pyecombe or Hickstead. This would also stop a lot of the traffic coming all the way down to the A23/27 junction.

From Falmer, unless you live in Moulsecoomb or Coldean, you're waiting in long queues for buses or trains or sitting in your car for ages trying to get out of the University or Bridge car parks.
It takes about an hour to walk back into town, I've done this for years. Absolutely hate waiting in a queue.

I think (could be wrong) that the important feature is the platform length at the termini, not at Falmer which can fit eight onto the platform while leaving excess dangling behind. So Seaford is limited to 8 carriages but Eastbourne can take 12 (as can Brighton). The Lewes shuttle is limited to five because of short platform there.
I have seen 12 carriages stop at Falmer but only once.

The more you have long trains dangling behind the platform, the longer it takes for everyone to get off (they have to walk through the train) which disrupts the schedule. However, I think people would prefer to be sitting in a warm, late train, rather than standing on a cold, wet ramp.

Bottom line is that waiting on the ramp for 20 minutes after an evening game only to see a 3 carriage train trundle into view is an insult to the support
