A little anecdote if I may

I went to The Crater Comedy Club (I think!) at the original Concorde on Btn front about fifteen years ago

Steven Grant was hosting and we had three 'comics' for our delectation

First one came on and was OK

Second one came on and completely folded, booed off after about one minute

Steven Grant came out and said, 'You were horrible to him! But then again, he was SHIT!'

Biggest laugh of the night

Stephen K. Amos isn't at all funny, which is the point of comedy isn't it?

Anecdote II

I went with a couple of pals to the Crater Comedy Club at The Komedia and this dude came on and was struggling a bit...

He eventually said, 'I didn't come here to be laughed at...' and a bloke sitting near the back retorted, 'You're doing a great job then aren't you?'

You had to be there!

Patrick Kielty - we get it your Irish, now stop going on about it.
Funny for about 10 mins as on Live at the Apollo but a whole dvd of jokes about it becomes a bit tiresome.

He is f***ing brilliant! Saw him at Newbury Corn Exchange a few months back and was in tears.

Michael McIntyre, every female comedian ever, Frankie Boyle, Russell Brand, Ricky Gervais, Omid Djalilli or whatever, Julian Clary are all shite.

One no-ones mentioned that i'm shocked at.

Paul Merton.

I like loads of the comics on this thread. Seems some people need to say they hate stuff to define themselves, which is odd.

Welcome to NSC, a place of opinions. I'm sure there are comedians out there that you don't rate yourself and it's hardly 'hate' as you say. One man's Ricky Gervais is another man's John Cleese, which is why the world turns.

Worst stand up I have seen (by any number of miles) was Jethro, this was about fifteen years ago or more and he was the main act at a holiday camp in Devon and evening entertainment was part of the holiday package.
Started off being lewd (there was a coachful of non-holiday makers that came to see him especially) Did you all come together? I'd have liked to have seen that...poor, weak but not offensive....still shit.
Then he used the coach link to go on about a black bus driver and how he was using all the oxygen up in the bus because of his large nostrils, the group I was with picked up our drinks, left and went to the quiet bar and played pool for the rest of the evening. This was about three minutes into his act.

Never bothered with him since, that was enough for me...f***ing wanker.

 That wasn't very professional of me .. !

I only ever compered at the Concorde in the Summer of 1998 so we are definitely going back some years now.

Interesting thread. Comedy is very subjective - what makes one person howl leaves another person cold.

But the most successful comics need to do this. You can be most things to most people (as most jobbing comics are) or you can 'specialise' and be everything to some people, and nothing to the rest. Those people go on to be huge - Alan Carr, Mcintyre, Jimmy Carr, Lee Evans... all mentioned in this thread.

Also as a footnote for the person who said there are no funny female standups, have a look at Sarah Millican - she's simply brilliant.

Stephen

I get what he's saying (Amos), white mans treatment of black man + black mans take on society...but the aggressive delivery and grouchyness (if thats a word) of it all doesn't do it for me I'm afraid.

.....just goes to show that we're all different I suppose, which is a good thing.
