1982 - all those legendary names, Paolo Rossi, Zico, Socrates, Aidair (or however it's spelt), Dino Zoff. I remember much more about the other nations than I do about England.

1966

Was at a Scout event at Withdean for the Mexico quarter final (think Brovian was there too) and heard of Charlton's 30 yard cracker on the radio.

Watched the semi final and final on black and white TV with my dad at our bungalow in Mile Oak .... happy days
It was indeed the QF - but we were playing Argentina when we were at Withdean. (We were re-enacting the seige of Mafeking if you remember! Us Cubs were redcoats driving off those pesky Boers)

The news was announced and we were allowed to throw our caps in the air and give three cheers. Good grief and people wonder why I'm now a revolutionary socialist republican.

Whilst I was technically here for 78 & 82 I wasn't very old.

1986 was when the wall chart came out!

Exactly the same for me, was 2 for the '78 and 6 (well obviously) for '82. Remember my 10th birthday, among my presents were 10 packs of Mexico '86 panini stickers, I became obsessed. Even better, this year the opening ceremony is my 30th birthday :clap2: :clap2: :clap2: :clap2: :clap2: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink:

Remember it was a red hot day! Got the Number 26 bus back to Mile Oak later.

Maybe I actually saw Charlton score against Mexico on TV ... thinking about it that was a group match wasn't it?

Yeah, it was. 2-0 win. Then another 2-0 against France in the last group game. Made up for the 'scoreless shocker' when we started with a 0-0 draw against Uraguay (can never spell that right: 'you r gay')

My first was 1958.The final was on telly from Sweden, and my mum thought a family trip to the open air swimming pool was a better deal!I was dragged the 2 miles to the pool, but finally made her see reason:I couldn't swim, but I loved football. So I ran home, breaking the world record for the 2 miles(also the metric form),climbed in a small window and settled in to see Pele beat Sweden 5-3!!

Excellent stuff! 2 miles now takes an hour and ten minutes on me zimmer.

WSU, just below the seagull.
First one i remember was 78.

Some memories that stick out:

The ticker tape from the final

Mario Kempes

Scotland losing to Peru and drawing with Iran

Peru rolling over and letting Argentina put six past them so they could qualify

Archie Gemmills goal

1986 - The year I was born, but don't rembember anything about it.
1990 - Was 4 but don't recall anything

1994 - Can vaguely rembember it, with the MacDonalds adverts of that kid in the park doing skills with the ball (The first world cup I can recall)

1998 - The first one I really got into, and followed.

2002 was great for me, I was in my house in uni, I was only working evenings and we had broken up for summer. I used to sleep on the sofa and set the TV to come on for the first game. I would then proceed to watch all three games for that day while my house mates waited on me hand and foot.

Those of us from families who bought a TV for the coronation will remember watching highlights of the 1954 World Cup. Even more exciting for us Newport kids was the fact that one of the linesmen in the final was Mervyn Griffiths, or "Mr" Griffiths as we knew him - a teacher in the school down the road. He was personally responsible for Hungary failing to win the trophy, because he flagged Puskas off-side, resulting in what would have been a late equaliser being disallowed.

A couple of years later and Mr Griffiths was refereeing primary school games that I played in. Marvellous scenes.

But the first tournament I really got engaged with was the 1958 event where the mighty Wales delivered enough to get us kids very excited indeed.
