If Steve Coppell had been employed at the start of the 2002-03 season, instead of in October 2003 after that run of ten straight defeats under Hinshelwood, he would have built a team that probably would've finished in our highest league position for years.

The amazing thing about that list is that more than half of the Albion managers in that period (33 years) can claim to have massive reputations that stand regardless of their time at the Albion.

Not necessarily as managers, of course.

Mullery first time because he is the only one that took us all the way to the first division. Bailey took us to our highest ever 7th before being sacked because the football was not entertaining with keep winning 1 - 0 or drawing 0 - 0

Has to be Clough followed by Steve Coppell, who's record of taking two no hopers to the higher echelons of the top division far outclasses all but Clough. Shame he didn't have the finances or the backing from the board (allegedly) to stay here longer.

If we are talking the man who managed the Albion best that has to be Mullery or Mike Bailey.

Chris Cattlin could have been up there if the egos in the boardroom had not sacked him before he had the chance to finish a job he was doing very well.

I think I'm right in saying he never had another job in League football after we saw fit to sack him??? Unbelievable really.

Taylor 1.

No contest for me, as he created an Albion with higher quality and aspirations, out of traditional and perrennial non-achieving 3rd Division 'Southern-league' lot - once a place for lesser-talent cloggers and codgers.
Mullery completely inherited the potential-greatness legacy from Taylor. Not to underestimate how he dealt with what he got, as he became an Albion legend from his half-time gee-ups, his deployment of players, and the respect he himself had as a WC winning veteran player.

Yes, we have had some excellent managers who made enigmatic impressions on our club, but for me it was Peter Taylor 1st that founded the team of hope and (a little) glory.

R.I.P., and thanks
