Would it be more or less of a shock than 83?

If we beat Liverpool?.I know we were in the same division then but having said that, Liverpool were winning European Cups for fun, title after title and were the best team in the country by quite some way. On current form and standings in the game in this country Id say it would be less of a shock than 83. Only a fool would stick their neck out and say we are going to beat them but I reckon we will give them a good run for their money and who knows???

Definitely less of a shock than '83 if we were to win this one. Would still be a big shock, but not quite of the same level.

Much less of a shock I would say which is more a reflection of how Liverpool have fallen back a little.

As someone who wasn't even born then - Why?

We had top flight experience then, but now we've only just made the second tier.

As the OP said, Liverpool were possibly the best team in the country in the 80's. I just think it would be less of a shock this time around as Liverpool are nowhere near the level they were at when we beat them in '83

FA Cup Winners

Less = Liverpool were in their pomp and we were really struggling - was without fail my best day as a Brighton fan, enjoyed it even more than the final. Never forget the Liverpool fans clapping Brighton off at the end

Their older fans have not got over the shock even today. They had not lost a Cup again at Anfield in a decade and hardly lost any in the League* And neither have they got over the shock of their defeat at the Goldstone the following year. (*Except, of course to Brighton on our previous visit.)

FA Cup - 5th Round - Liverpool vs Brighton

And Kenny Dalglish and Lawrenson were playing for them and then there was Jimmy Case and Jammy Melia.

About the same. They are worse, but so relatively are we.

But wouldn't that be roughly the equivalent of Wigan beating Man Utd in the Cup?

Did Liverpool field a full strength side?

No, Liverpool weren't just the top team of their day. They completely lorded it over the rest of the country.

Imagine if in a space of three years, Man City won the Premier League three years in a row, the Carling Cup three years in a row and also the Champions League. And in the middle of that, Wigan won 2-1 at Maine Road in the cup against a full-strength Man City team. That would be the equivalent.

Weren't Liverpool unbeaten at home in cup competitions for ages as well.

Definately a massive massive shock in '83

1 Bruce Grobbelaar
2 Phil Neal
3 Alan Kennedy
4 Mark Lawrenson
5 Ronnie Whelan
6 Alan Hansen
7 Kenny Dalglish
8 Sammy Lee
9 Ian Rush
10 David Hodgson
11 Graeme Souness

This team is light years ahead of there current team (comparing their team to other clubs of that time)

You cannot underestimated the Liverpool team of the early 80s they absolutely dominated Europe and won trophies for fun it was a shock when anyone beat them. They are now an average team in the Premiership and the Premiership no longer dominates Europe so would not be on a par with 83.

Also, as a sign of their dominance, Liverpool won the League by 11 points that season.

It is probably a surprise to anyone under 30 quite how successful a team Liverpool were about then, although they didn't have a great FA Cup record.

Bob Paisley's last season as Liverpool manager ended on a high as they topped the First Division with a comfortable lead. Bob Paisley retired as Liverpool manager with a record 21 prizes in nine years.

Paisley is the only manager in history to win three European Cups.

Only the FA Cup eluded Paisley .... which is why the match was so important.

, although they didn't have a great FA Cup record.

That's certainly true.

That said, while Liverpool's FA Cup form wasn't brilliant, the gulf between the sides was underlined by Albion's poor cup record. Luckily, no video footage exists of us losing 3-0 at home to Oxford, two divisions before us, in the FA Cup the previous year!

It is also probably of interest to the younger set that Liverpool basically played the first XI for every game (less injuries) so it wasn't a case of them resting players. I guess in those days other teams raised their game against them in the cup.

The magic of the cup, I guess.
