As the imdb list did not meet the approval of Vorowhatsisname I also checked Rotten Tomatoes generally well respected

All - Fresh 5608 Rotten 385 - average 9.1
T Meter Critics - Fresh 230 Rotten 13 - average 8.5
Critics - Fresh 12 Rotten 0 - average 8.7

Seems fairly comprehensive to me , still Vorowhatsisname knows better.

And Roger Ebert is not to my knowledge a 15 year old internet geek.

But would you agree that very recent and well regarded films probably show up high in the list and then settle back to their true position over time? That might explain why a new film is top and the other currently well regarded movie is in the top 30.

I agree with that it will slip down but should hold in the top 20 of all time, as will WALL.E hold in the top 50 of all time. But it is a good guide and not just a 15 year old geeks list as whatsisname made up.

I missed Wall.e but the family went to see it (was on cricket tour). They said the first half hour was superb but the rest a bit predictable. IS it really a top 50 of all time film? If so, that makes Summer 08 a classic year for great movies.

All lists do favour current entries and can be rated higher than what there accurate position really is.

I’m sure that when Southern FM use to do that 500 greatest songs of all-time list which was printed in the local media, there were always some recent songs that were a lot higher up than what it should have been, then would drop heavily the following year.

I remember the 12A rating being brought in when the first Spiderman film was released as all the little kids were whinging that they weren't going to be able to see the movie. I'm sorry but 12A is the biggest load of crap ever. What is the point of having this rating at all?!?!? If the film is not suitable for under 12's then it's not suitable for under 12's. Simple as that.

Massively skewed towards men in their 20's isn't it (69%) and also to those in their 20's generally (78%). Might explain a few things.

Yes, I suppose the demographics reflects the film as a fil will attract a wide range but a specific hardcore. I will post the Sex in the City demographics, that should be interesting.

Of course IMDB ratings aren't going to be perfect, but no poll is. I would say it's as close as you are going to get to a comprehensive list.

And as for the original post I'm not so sure that ratings are that definitive anyway. Maybe 6 is too young to see the film (I haven't seen it yet), but I was watching some 18's at 10/11 and it hasn't done me any harm.

I do. It is all about opinions and not having to rely on IMDB to tell me if I enjoyed a particular film. Titanic, for me, came across as being a boring and predictable (not just the ending!) tale for those who are quite happy to be spoon fed a script and will come out weak at the knees due to computerised special effects.

12A - up to the responsible adult to decide if the child under 12 should watch it. Considering most of the parents do not fall into the "responsible adult" category, and the cinema staff will not turn away a paying customer, is it any wonder so many children are completely mentally f***ed up? In my Year 5 class, I asked the children who had bought, or played the latest version of GTA. About 12 of them. Many more play Call of Duty, the WWF/WWE licenced games, Halo, etc. They frequently tell me how they have watched the latest pirated horror film, and they give all the details, so they are not making it up. Then again, you should see them playing football in the playground (before I banned them!). They take all the bad influences from the televised stuff, and translate it to breaktime - all the "arms wide, chest out" complaining stuff, "tactical hacking", etc, etc. I used to think that the argument that said that children were influenced by TV was bollocks, but not any more. They are numb to violence, it means nothing to them, and they copy the worst behaviour they see modelled - the cartoon wresting violence is copied to the point where we had a child "drop" from the decking onto a prone child below - he had no idea that he was going to cause serious injury (broken ribs and unconsciousness), because he saw it on telly and in video games all the time. There really should be a "driving licence" for parents.
