A TALENTED young footballer has been jailed for carrying out two muggings.
Ross Flynn had been signed by Crystal Palace and was training with their
youth academy.
He had recently agreed a new contract with rivals QPR when his promising
career came to a halt.
Flynn, who was spotted by talent scouts while playing for Brighton youth
sides, is today starting a three-year sentence at a youth offenders'
institute for the robberies.
The 17-year-old was found guilty of holding a knife to the throat of one
terrified victim and stealing his mobile phone in Richmond Parade, Brighton,
last year.
After he was convicted last month, he pleaded guilty to a second robbery at
The Level, where he stole another teenager's phone in February.
At the time Flynn, who lived in Washington Street, Brighton, was on bail for
the first robbery.
His trial at Hove Crown Court was attended by Bishop Abel Muzorewa, the
first prime minister of Zimbabwe/Rhodesia.
The Argus was prevented by a legal ruling from identifying Flynn or any of
his relatives during the trial.
Judge David Rennie lifted the order yesterday.
Bishop Muzorewa, who is Flynn's great uncle, flew to Britain from New York
to listen to the evidence against his great-nephew.
He told The Argus he had visited the teenager while he was on remand in
prison and had been shocked to hear details of the robbery.
The bishop said: "I baptised him in Zimbabwe when he was two-years-old. I
was shocked to be told he was in court.
"He is full of talent and personality and I have a lot of hope for him for
the future."
Peter Hofferd, prosecuting, told the court Flynn's mother had returned both
stolen mobile phones to the victims.
Ben Walker-Nolan, defending, said Flynn had signed a contract with Crystal
Palace which was one below those offered to full-time professionals.
Sentencing him, Judge Rennie told Flynn he had carried out the robberies to
gain street credibility.
He said the knifepoint robbery was "chilling and cowardly" but recognised
that he was a bright and talented young man.
Judge Rennie said: "With your undoubted sporting talent it is possible a
bright future may still be available to you. Only time will tell."

Obviously a contract with Chrystal Palarse ranks way below armed robbery as a measure of street cred

But it's technically incorrect with regard to the Albion, as he isn't and wasn't a rising star with any team bearing that name, and the Argus should be ashamed of themselves if they've tried to suggest otherwise.

It wouldn't have made the news if it said "Rising Palace Star...". No one would blink an eyelid reading that headline as we all know that type of behaviour is the norm amongst the Croydon cavemen.
