What is scran and why do people use the word?

Old word for a bar tab I believe. Meaning changed over time to going out scranning for food, i.e. not a proper home-cooked meal. Then got adopted by the military for rations and fell out of that into regular slang. Or something like that.

Most of our older slang came via the army or the navy! Now it all seems to come from Xwitter
