There are in fact 2 swastikas, left and right. One represents male and one female. If you travel to anywhere with buddhists statues you will see a swastika on the icon, and in fact it also adorns a large number of synagogoues, temples and mosques in the east.

If you look closely at this image you can just make out the swastika in the centre of buddha's chest.
