Of course the problems against Sturrock's lot ran deeper than who we play up front. Their front two and wide players ran us ragged. They were quicker, better players than we have. Sometimes you just can't beat a beater team, and that was this occasion, Sturrock had strengthened appreciably since we played them at Sheffield. It's not as simple as playing 3 up front, we saw that in the previous home game at Southampton. Although I'm sure if McGhee played the game again, he would want quicker players on the flank than Reid and Mayo to track their guys, but we were not overflowing with options. Carole and Frutos did slightly better in the second half, but they are not players renowned for their defensive contribution.

Not sure about the pace on the wings, on the right maybe as their FB didn't look to fast. However when Frutos came on it showed that Mayo had done a decent job on Simek because he started to get forward well once Mayo went off. I think the problems were more to do with the pace of their strikers against Butters (love Guy but he shouldn't have played this game) and our CM dropping to deep and allowing their centre backs the oppotunity to concentrate on shackling our front two. If Carole had played I think it would have been interesting to see as he would given their centre halfs more to think about due to his tendancy to drop inside.

Sorry, with Parkin, Mooney up front and Igoe running their midfield, that was not an ordinary Swindon side, they were actually a better attacking unit than us, but we edged them because we were better organised side and defended better across the season. That was down to McGhee.

paragraph 1: We probably made heavy weather in the home game by not putting the slow, cumbersome Swindon defence under pressure. Yes they were useful coming forward.

paragraph 2: Perhaps we would have lost anyway. The worry is not just that we play 4-4-2 but that there is a lack of movement and we don't get enough players forward at certain critical stages of the game. Sturrock had strengthened his team but he crucially was tactically astute and got good performances out of players like Burton who don't usually unsettle us.
