[Albion] Wellbeck's replacement from within

If Potter throws Ferguson straight into the fray, then l would expect Connolly to be beating down the manager's door demanding some answers.
100%. I fully expect Welbeck to be replaced by someone already in the 1st team squad

It opens the door for Connolly. This is his time to show he can nail down a position as a striker in this league

If he is out of form or favour, the next most likely option is to change our 3-4-1-2 to a 3-4-2-1. Solly and MacAllister are the two most likely to come in to that, but I don't discount Gross or Lallana. On the right side of a front 3, is I still think Gross best position.

Another more intriguing option is Lamptey

Sarmiento and Tolaj should be in the reckoning for a place in the matchday squad now. Let's start to introduce them gradually, see how they get on.

Locadia, sorry I still don't see him as a realistic option and i'd rather we backed our youngsters

The problem we'll have is if Maupay gets injured or suspended. The club took a huge risk going into the season with these striking options. This isn't hindsight. 90% on here said so.

The fact this is likely to force us in to a formation change shows why so many of us were disappointed in not getting a striker in. Hopefully Connolly is ready to step up…

If we don’t have faith in da yoof, I wouldn’t have a problem with Gross or Trossard playing further forward if need-be.

Not sure Gross would be suited taking Monday night as example, the ball would have bounced multiple times and come to a stand still.

Connolly will start with Jeremy S promoted to the bench would be my guess

I have only seen that Welbeck is going to see a specialist, have I missed the announcement that he is going to be out for months? Or is this a classic case of 2+2=5 and he's now crocked and unable to play for months because he is seeing a specialist?

Was thinking the same thing.

For all we know the specialist might have said "yeah your hamstrings are shite and this will happen again. Go home and rest for two weeks and get back on the pitch and pray it will be a while until the next time".

Absolutely agree with the original poster. Tolaj looks an absolute beast. Was gutted he didn’t get some time in the Swansea game. Big and strong, hammer of a left foot. Got to be an option from the bench.

So Wellbeck is off to see a specialist as the hamstrings have had enough, bad news but frankly it was always a risk not getting another body in up front as we all knew .

But it is what it is and we have to find another way and another striker from within the club until at least January.

Is that official?

Quite. He's not even been ruled out for this weekend yet!

If he is unavailable in 2 weeks time then I'd be amazed to see someone promoted directly from the U23s given that we started our last game with an Argentine international attacker on the bench.

I really hope Tolaj is given a go at some point.

I know Sarmiento and Ferguson are very exciting but Tolaj is definitely the under 23 who has impressed me the most in their matches this season. He should have no problem with the physicality of the league anyway - he looks as strong as an ox and not slow. Also seems years ahead of his time in his understanding of how to play the front man/target man role - his movement, awareness and hold up play are very impressive.

Sarmiento Is training with the first team squad today looking at the photos posted by the club . Perhaps GP will spring a surprise and have him on the bench . I think it’s unlikely but not impossible especially if Welbeck is out for a few weeks .

There are plenty of options that involve Maupay, Connolly, Trossard, Moder, March, Richards, Locadia and MacAllister - 6 of whom didn't start v Palace. There's virtually no chance Tolaj or Ferguson or Emmerson are getting near to the bench just yet. Although Sarmiento - who isn't a striker - is a bright prospect - that bench still looks pretty full up even with 9 players.

The 20 players for Arsenal look like being
Sanchez/Steele,
Lamptey, Dunk, Duffy, Burn, Cucurella, Roberts, Veltman , March
Lallana, Gross, Moder, Richards, MacAllister, Bissouma,
Trossard, Maupay, Connolly, Locadia

So potentially 1 spare space if Biss fails the fitness test.

You have because there hasn't been one.

Did Tolaj play in the Carabaou Cup games?
